
Ziemek, McDonald earn spots at 2016 NCAA Indoor Championships

McDonald makes NCAA debut in 3000 meters, Ziemek to compete in heptathlon for third time at NCAA meet
MADISON, Wis. – The Wisconsin men's track and field duo of Morgan McDonald and Zach Ziemek each qualified for the 2016 NCAA Indoor Championships at the CrossPlex in Birmingham, Alabama, the NCAA announced late Tuesday night.
The duo is coming off of a spectacular performance at last week's Big Ten indoor meet, where McDonald and Ziemek each scored 18 points to help UW to a runner-up finish with 73 team points.
McDonald makes his NCAA indoor championships debut in the 3000 meters on March 12 at 6:10 p.m. (CT). The school record holder in the indoor mile, McDonald has a personal-best time of 7 minutes, 52.09 seconds, in the 3000 meters, which ranks 14th in the field. A Sydney, Australia, native, McDonald's time in the 3000 meters ranks seventh in school history.
Last weekend at the Big Ten meet, McDonald won the 3000 meters while finishing runner-up in the 5000 meters.
Ziemek, a three-time first-team All-American, will compete in the heptathlon on March 11 and 12. "Double Z" is seeded fifth in the seven-discipline event with a season-best score of 5,825 points, which he set at the Jack Jennett Invitational Jan. 29-30.
Last Friday at the Big Ten indoor meet, Ziemek won the pole vault with a clearance of 17 feet, 7 1/2 inches and finished second in the long jump with a mark of 25-1 1/4.
The heptathlon kick starts the national championships on March 11 at noon with the heptathlon 60 meters serving as the first event of this year's NCAA championships. The heptathlon 60-meter hurdles is also the first event on March 12, as the fifth event of the heptathlon will start at noon.
'Ziemek finished fifth in the heptathlon at both the 2013 and 2014 NCAA Indoor Championships prior to redshirting last season.Â
