Badgers close regular season with loss to Purdue

Wisconsin gets 18 points from Michala Johnson but falls, 68-48

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- The Wisconsin women's basketball team dropped a 68-48 road game to Purdue in its final regular season game Sunday. The Badgers finished the season 7-21, including a 3-15 mark in Big Ten Conference play.

"We did not have our best offensive game tonight," UW coach Bobbie Kelsey said. "We had some opportunities that we did not capitalize on and the Boilermakers had a great game.

"Tonight was emotional. There was a lot of excitement for the seniors; we just had our senior night not too long ago so we know what that's like. Purdue capitalized on that and used it to their advantage."

The Badgers matched Purdue (18-10, 9-8 Big Ten) basket for basket in the early going. UW took an early 9-4 lead with 7:37 remaining in the first quarter. The Badgers maintained that lead, 13-10, with back-to-back baskets made by Michala Johnson with six minutes left in the period.

Purdue tied the game up, 13-13, with a little over five minutes remaining. The lead switched four times in the next two minutes with Purdue capitalizing on back-to-back 3-pointers giving it a 22-17 advantage with 3:07 remaining in the first quarter. The Badgers were unable to take the lead back as they ended the first quarter down by two points, 26-24.

Wisconsin started the second quarter off by tying the game 26-26 with a jumper by Tessa Cichy. Thanks to two scoring droughts of three-plus minutes by UW, Purdue was able to build a 42-28 lead with 3:17 to go.

The Badgers were outscored 17-8 in the second quarter and Purdue took a 43-32 lead into halftime.

"You do have to fight back and get yourself in a position where you can to take the lead back with a bucket or two, you have to take advantage of those opportunities," Kelsey said. "We just didn't do our job,"

UW made four of its first six baskets of the second half to cut Purdue's lead to seven, 47-40, with 6:18 left to go in the third quarter. Purdue then made a 3-pointer and a layup to bring their lead to 52-40 with four minutes to go. Johnson was able to finish out the quarter by scoring a jump shot and a layup for Wisconsin making it a 12-point game, 56-44.

The fourth quarter was low scoring, with the Boilermakers outscoring the Badgers 12-4 to provide the final margin of 68-48.

"We had our chances and they didn't do anything different," Kelsey said. "We just stopped being aggressive. We have to get to the basket and we just didn't do that."

Johnson had a team-high 18 points followed by Avyanna Young, with 10 points. Purdue's Ashley Morrissette led the Boilermakers with 28 points.

The Boilermakers shot 47.2 percent (25-of-53) from the field, including 60.0 percent (9-of-15) from 3-point range. Wisconsin shot 35.0 percent (21-of-60) from the field, including 15.4 percent (2-of-13) from behind the arc. UW got to the free throw line six times, making four for 66.7 percent while Purdue hit 75.0 percent (9-of-12).

Wisconsin was outrebounded 37-30, with Nicole Bauman leading the team with seven boards followed by Cichy with six boards.

Wisconsin turned the ball over 14 times, allowing for the Boilermakers to score 20 points off UW giveaways and outscored the Badgers 11-0 in bench points.
