Badgers drop battle to Wolverines

Johnson’s second-consecutive double-double not enough in road loss

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - A strong second-half surge and a number of late UW turnovers pushed Michigan past the Wisconsin women's basketball team, 82-65, on Thursday night. Despite a first-half lead by the Badgers and a second-consecutive double-double from senior Michala Johnson, UW was unable to hold on at the Crisler Center.

"We missed some defensive assignments," head coach Bobbie Kelsey said. "They did a good job of going to the basket and getting fouled. You've got to play some one-on-one defense sometimes. The good players are going to find a way to score, and we didn't do a good job at all."

Wisconsin (7-16, 3-10 Big Ten) played well in the first half, outscoring Michigan, 23-22, in the first quarter, and battling the Wolverines to a 14-14 draw in the second.

The Badgers topped UM in first-half shooting statistics, recording 54 percent (14-26) from the field and 43 percent (3-7) from 3-point range. The Wolverines (14-10, 6-7 Big Ten) shot only 46 percent (12-26) from the field and 33 percent (1-3) from the arc in the first half.

An early 9-0 run gave UW a 12-4 lead with 6:17 to play in the first, but the Wolverines trailed just 23-22 heading into the second.

The teams went back and forth in the second quarter, as Wisconsin only gave up the lead for 25 seconds late in the period before tying it back up and ultimately taking the lead once again, 37-36, to end the half on top of the scoreboard.

The second half was a reverse of the first as the Badgers fell to 31.3 percent (5-16) from the field.

Michigan used a 10-0 run to break open a tie game and take a 55-45 lead with 2:30 left in the third. UM's Katelynn Flaherty recorded a game-high 23 points, tallying 20 points in the second half alone, six of which during the Wolverine's 10-0 game-deciding spree.

The Badgers committed 15 turnovers in the game, five in the fourth quarter.

Wisconsin's Avyanna Young recorded a season-high 16 points to lead the Badgers. Young also grabbed eight rebounds, nearly marking her first-career double-double at Wisconsin.

Johnson claimed her 10th-career and second-consecutive double-double with 15 points and 13 boards.

"We're very happy with their production," Kelsey said of Young and Johnson. "We need that all the time. Avyanna was in a little slump and I'm glad she was able to get through her rough patch.

"We need our seniors playing the way we need them to play. It's disappointing because at the end of the game, we weren't matched up the way we were supposed to be. We don't quit and we don't end the game poorly. We continue to play until the final horn."

Bauman and Dakota Whyte scored in double figures as well with 10 points apiece.

The Badgers continue the two-game road trip in Bloomington, Indiana, on Sunday when they take on the Hoosiers in a 1 p.m. game.

"You want to keep them positive and fresh minded," Kelsey said, looking forward.
