Freestyler takes Big Ten Swimmer of the Week honors, teammate Hodge named top freshman
MADISON, Wis. – Cierra Runge's quadruple school record performance and Cooper Hodge's top-10 individual finish at last week's Texas Invitational caught the attention of the Big Ten Conference.
Â
Runge was named Big Ten Women's Swimmer of the Week and Hodge garnered Big Ten Men's Freshman of the Week honors from the league on Wednesday.
Â
Runge earns her first her first accolades from the Big Ten after notching a school record and an NCAA automatic qualifying mark on each day of the competition, a total of four in all.
Â
During the first day of action in Austin, Runge and her fellow relay mates broke the Wisconsin 800-yard freestyle relay record by nearly two seconds, recording a time of 7 minutes, 5.42 seconds that was good enough for fourth place and an "A" cut.
Â

Â

The time stands as the No. 6 time in the nation this season and the second-fastest time in the conference.Â
Â
The Cochranville, Pennsylvania, native kept the momentum going into the final day of competition, as she ended her time in Texas on a high note by shattering the previous Wisconsin record in the 1,650 freestyle by more than eight seconds.
Â
Runge's time of 15:52.22 – fourth-best nationally – earned her a third win on the weekend and a fourth "A" cut of the invitational.
Â
Hodge was a standout in the 400-yard individual medley, leading the Badgers with a seventh-place finish in a provisional NCAA qualifying time of 3:53.22. His mark of 3:51.15 in preliminaries is the 53rd-fastest in the nation and ranks eighth in the Big Ten.
