Wisconsin faces another top-10 test in Georgia
MADISON, Wis. – After a well-deserved week off from competition, the Wisconsin swimming and diving program continues to navigate through its difficult dual-meet schedule, this time heading to the Peach State to face nationally-ranked Georgia.
Both Bulldogs teams rank in the top eight, with the men slotted at the No. 7 spot in the country and the women checking in at No. 8 in the latest CSCAA poll.
The two-day meet begins at 3 p.m. (CT) on Friday, with the second day of action getting underway at 9 a.m. on Saturday.
The Bulldogs have been dominating competition thus far this season, sweeping dual meets against top-20 teams North Carolina and Florida.
The Georgia women are the reigning national champions, scoring 414 points en route to the program's seventh NCAA title in March. The Bulldogs men also saw success at the NCAA meet, placing fifth with final score of 239.
The Badgers will head into Athens with valuable experience under their belt after visiting NC State two weeks ago. The No. 13 Wisconsin women came away with five wins against the fourth-ranked Wolfpack, including a sweep in the 1- and 3-meter springboard diving events courtesy of senior Ashley Peterson.
In the pool, senior Chase Kinney took the 50-yard freestyle in an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 22.82 seconds. Sophomore Cierra Runge also notched an NCAA "B" cut time in her win in the 200-yard freestyle, touching the wall in 16 minutes, 30.52 seconds.
Senior Dana Grindall recorded UW's other win by taking the 100-yard butterfly in 55.15.
The No. 17-ranked Badgers men were highlighted by six individual runner-up finishes in their efforts against the No. 3 Wolfpack.
Senior Harrison Tran and freshman Kevin Pomeroy led the team with two second-place finishes each.
Tran earned his finishes in both the 100 and 200-yard fly, clocking in at 48.56 and 1:49.74.
Pomeroy was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week after his runner-up showing on both the 1- and 3-meter boards.
Seniors Cannon Clifton and Brett Pinfold came away with the other two runner-up finishes, with Clifton notching a time of 20.26 in the 50 free and Pinfold touching the wall in 1:40.01 in the 200 free.
