Badgers rookie named Big Ten Freshman of the Week for second time
MADISON, Wis. – After racking up a pair of NCAA provisional qualifying times against Georgia last weekend, Beata Nelson has been recognized as Big Ten Freshman of the Week.
This is the second time this season Nelson has garnered the honor, the first coming after she recorded four top-three finishes to lead the Badgers in a dual meet at NC State.
Against the Bulldogs, Nelson placed fourth or higher in all six events she competed in, including a second-place showing in the 200-yard backstroke where she recorded a season-best and "B" cut time of 1 minute, 57.62 seconds, which ranks 24th nationally.
The Verona, Wisconsin, native notched her other provisional cut in the 100 backstroke, touching the wall in 54.86 to take fourth.
Nelson also competed in a slew of relay events in Athens, propelling the 200 medley relay team to a runner-up finish, while also contributing to third-place finishes in the 200 freestyle relay, 400 freestyle relay and 400 medley relay events.
The freshman has been making her mark in the conference this season, ranking second in the 100 back and third in the 200 back in the Big Ten while also holding the ninth-fastest time in the conference in the 100 butterfly.
Nelson will be back in the pool as she joins a group of six Badgers chosen to represent the Big Ten in the inaugural USA College Challenge in Indianapolis this Saturday and Sunday. The meet will see the top swimmers from the Big Ten square off against members of the USA Swimming National Team, with both days of the event airing live on BTN.
