Badgers prepare for Border Battle showdown in Minnesota

UW and Minnesota renew their rivalry for a second-straight year Saturday
MADISON, Wis. – For the second straight year, the Wisconsin track and field teams will take on border-battle rival Minnesota in a dual meet, as the Badgers and Golden Gophers meet on Saturday in a Noon (CT) meet at the Minnesota Fieldhouse in Minneapolis.
After sweeping their dual meet with Notre Dame last week, the Badgers look to avenge a Gopher sweep in Madison last year, as both the men's and women's teams dropped close contests to their rival.
Four athletes shined last week in UW's season-opener at The Shell as Lorenzo Larry and Austin Mudd shined on the men's squad and All-Americans Kelsey Card and Georgia Ellenwood combined to win four events for the women.
Larry, a transfer from Spartanburg Methodist College, lit up the 60 meter heat with a blazing time of 6.79. Despite it being his first performance for the Cardinal and White, Larry managed to break into the record book with the eighth-fastest 60 meter time in program history.
A fresh, but familiar face on the track was redshirt senior Austin Mudd. After redshiring last year due to injuries, the experienced runner found himself at the front of the pack once again, winning the 1000 meters with a time of 2:27.41.
Ellenwood started off her season strong with two first place finishes. Ellenwood first secured first place in the high jump with a clearance of 5-9 1/4 (1.76m) and then followed that up with another victory in the 60 meter hurdles which she finished in 8.81 seconds.
Card also opened up her season with two wins that led to her being named Big Ten Indoor Field Athlete of the Week. Card dominated the shot put with a heave of 55-4 1/4 (16.87m) as well as the weight throw in which she had a throw of 66-8 3/4 (20.34m). Card also won the discus exhibition with an incredible toss of 196-0 (59.74m) which eclipsed her previous personal record by over two meters.
With a meet under its belt and facing arguably the school's biggest rival, UW Director of Track and Field Mick Byrne said "It's going to be a different ball-game this weekend" leading up to the squad's final dual of the year.
Field events begin at noon with running events to follow at 1 p.m.
