MADISON, Wis. – Despite leading 20-15 at the end of the first quarter, the Wisconsin women's basketball team was outscored 34-10 by No. 5 Maryland in the second quarter to fall to the Terrapins 90-65 on Wednesday night at the Kohl Center.
The Badgers (6-11, 2-5 Big Ten) came out red hot at home as they hit four of their first seven shots to go up 9-5 with 6:21 to play in the first period. The Terrapins closed the gap and took their first lead of the game with a pair of 3-pointers from Shatori Walker-Kimbrough as Maryland (17-2, 6-1) surged ahead, 11-10, with 4:23 left in the quarter.
Not ready to shut down, Wisconsin went on an 8-0 run to regain the lead and sit atop the Terrapins 18-11 with just over two minutes to play in the first. A pair of Maryland layups coupled with a quick jumper from
Michala Johnson left the score at 20-15 in favor of UW at the end of first quarter.
The Terrapins began the second quarter with a 5-0 run to even the score, 20-20, with nine minutes to play. The Badgers took their final lead of the game, 22-20, with a layup from Young as the clock read 8:27, but the Terrapins capitalized on a successful scoring offense and effective defense, as they went on a 29-8 run throughout the remainder of the second quarter.
The Terrapins finished out the period on an 11-0 run to bring the score to 49-30 at the break. Walker-Kimbrough keyed Maryland with 22 first-half point, shooting 8-of-11 from the field, including 6-of-6 from 3-point range.
Wisconsin cut the lead to 16 (53-37) with 8:09 to play in the third quarter but Maryland outscored UW 13-4 over the next four minutes to lead 66-41 with 4:09 to play.
The Terps led by 33 points twice in the fourth quarter, including at 88-55 with 5:19 remaining with the Badgers cutting it to 23 (88-65) with 2:03 left. Maryland scored a late jumper for the final.
The win was the Terrapin's 900th program victory as Maryland becomes just the 14th NCAA women's basketball team to earn the accolade.
Senior
Nicole Bauman shared game-high honors with 22 points as she shot 9-of-16 from the field, including 4-of-8 from 3-point range. Redshirt junior
Avyanna Young added 14 point on 6-of-9 shooting and senior
Dakota Whyte chipped in 11 points and added a team-high six assists.
Maryland was led by Walker-Kimbrough and Brionna Jones with 22 points apiece.
The Terps shot 55.1 percent (38-of-69) from the field, including 10-of-17 (58.8 percent) from 3-point range. The Badgers hit 40.9 percent (27-of-66) from the field, including 28.6 percent (4-of-14) from deep.
Wisconsin was outrebounded 40-31, led by six boards from
Tessa Cichy. Maryland entered the game averaging 47.9 rebounds per game and outrebounding its opponents by 19.2 boards per game.
UW had only 10 turnovers while dishing off 13 assists but Maryland handed off 23 dimes and blocked the Badgers six times.
The Badgers continue the Big Ten Conference schedule at home as they host Minnesota on Saturday at 11 a.m., from the Kohl Center.
