Wisconsin claims 12 of 15 events in dual meet win
The Badger men's track and field team shook the off-season rust from their shoulders as they faced Notre Dame at The Shell in a season opening dual meet, earning a 80-45 win over the Fighting Irish.
"This meet certainly helped," said Wisconsin Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Mick Byrne. "To get on the spikes and the uniform and for some of the younger kids, get rid of the nerves."
Wisconsin earned victories in 12 of the 15 events, including an impressive performance by transfer junior Lorenzo Larry in the 60-meter dash. Larry exploded across the finish line in 6.79 seconds, the eighth fastest Wisconsin sprint of all time. Wisconsin teammate Alex Teague followed closely behind, placing second with a time of 7.10.
In the 400 meters, sophomore Corbin Ellis electrified the crowd, making up a five-meter deficit in the home stretch of the race to lead the Badgers to another win, crossing the line in 48.93.
Wisconsin had a 1-2-3 finish in the 600 meters, led by the debut of freshman Eric Brown, who won in 1 minute, 20.78 seconds. Brown was followed by sophomore Cooper Barth and freshman Jack Heinrich, finishing with times of 1:22.67 and 1:22.68, respectively.
Back on the track after a redshirt season was Austin Mudd, who placed first in the 1000 meters with a time of 2:27.41.
"It's great to see him back in spikes after a year and a half hiatus," said Byrne. On his heels was sophomore Carl Hirsch, who finished second in 2:28.71.
Freshman Dairius Ragland and Trent Nytes also earned victories in their debuts. Ragland won the 60-meter hurdles in 8.21 seconds while Nytes cleared the high jump with a leap of six feet, 8 ¼ inches.
Wisconsin also claimed victories in the long jump and triple jump, headlining senior Charlie Foss and sophomore Zac Webster, respectively. Foss won the long jump at 22-11 while Webster claimed the triple jump at 45-9.
The Badgers hit the road next weekend, traveling to Minnesota to face the Golden Gophers in a dual meet that begins at noon.
"It's just going to be a different ball-game next weekend."
