OMAHA, Neb. - Tough defense keyed the 11th-ranked Wisconsin volleyball team to a 25-19, 25-21, 25-23 win at Creighton on Saturday afternoon. The Badgers improve to 8-1 on the season.

Wisconsin recorded a season-high 13 blocks, averaging more than 4.0 blocks per set, and also outdug the Bluejays 52-49. Junior Haleigh Nelson tallied a season-high seven blocks while junior Romana Kriskova added a season-high five stuffs. Senior Taylor Morey continued her impressive back-row play, leading all players with 18 digs.

The Badger defense held Creighton to a .152 hitting percentage (36 kills - 19 errors - 112 attempts) while Wisconsin hit .197 (43-19-122).

Sophomore Kelli Bates led all players with 12 kills while Kriskova tied her season high with 10 kills. Four other players added four-or-more kills, including setter Lauren Carlini, who had four kills on five attempts with no errors for an impressive .800 hitting percentage. The junior also put up 34 assists, running the UW offense.

Five blocks in the first set, including two to put Wisconsin up 19-15, keyed the win. The score was tied at 15 before Tionna Williams teamed with Kelli Bates and Lauren Carlini on two blocks to put the Badgers up for good at 19-15. Kills by Lauryn Gillis and Kriskova sealed the win.

The second set featured 11 early ties, including at 14-14 before a 5-1 run put UW up 19-15. The block was again the key as Nelson teamed with Gillis and Bates to give the Badgers the leada. Wisconsin led 23-16 off a service ace by Nelson before the Bluejays went on a 3-0 run to cut it to 23-19. A kill by Bates gave UW its first set point at 24-19 but Creighton held off two set points before a kill from Williams put the Badgers up two sets to none.

The Badgers trailed by as many as four points (10-6) in the third set before tying the score at 14. Wisconsin scored three straight to take a 19-16 lead but the Bluejays rallied to tie the set at 19. Creighton also tied the score at 22 before three kills by Gillis completed the sweep.

Wisconsin wraps up the Creighton Classic against Arkansas tonight at 8 p.m.
