Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Badgers fall to in-state rival Marquette on road

Wisconsin unable to overcome first quarter deficit

MILWAUKEE, Wis. – Marquette snapped a three-game losing streak to the Wisconsin women's basketball team with a 77-61 win on Sunday afternoon at the Al McGuire Center.

"It was very disappointing because we felt like we had a really good game plan," head coach Bobbie Kelsey said. "At the very beginning of the game, we felt like we weren't executing things the way we were supposed. They were very aggressive and did their game plan to a T and we didn't box out. That's the bottom line, we gave up 23 offensive boards and that's 31 second-chance points."

From the second the Golden Eagles stepped on the court, they came out ready to put some points on the board. Marquette jumped out to a 12-2 lead off of a 7-0 run early in the first quarter and just kept firing. The Golden Eagles extended that to a 15-0 run that was finally stopped by a layup accompanied by an and-1 from senior Michala Johnson.

After Johnson's layup, Wisconsin went on a 5-0 run to end the first quarter on a high note, trailing 20-7. The Badgers came out hot in the second quarter with an explosive 10-2 run capped off by a 3-point shot from senior Nicole Bauman.

But Marquette wasn't giving up so easily. After the Badgers cut the deficit to 11 (26-15) off of a basket from Johnson, Marquette's Natisha Hiedeman nailed a shot from beyond the arc to give the Golden Eagles back their 14-point lead. Bauman answered a back with a 3-pointer of her own but back-to-back shots from the Golden Eagles kept their double digit lead, 33-20, with 4:17 to play in the half.

Two jump shots in a row from MU's Allazia Blockton ignited a Marquette offense that held onto a steady lead at halftime. A jumper from Danielle King at the two-second mark gave the Golden Eagles a 41-26 advantage going into the locker room despite two late shots from Tessa Cichy and Cayla McMorris.

The Badgers came out strong in the third quarter, blazing on an 8-0 run to cut the Marquette lead back to 10 at 44-34 with 7:15 on the clock. Johnson drove straight through the paint to the basket and was quickly followed by Young who banked in a shot through a wide open lane off of a steal. Bauman tipped a shot back in to force Marquette into a timeout and complete the 10-0 run.

After a tip-in from Shantelle Valentine, the Badgers came the closest they would (46-38) with the Golden Eagles for the rest of the game off of a Bauman 3-point shot. After that, the Golden Eagles went out on a 10-7 run the complete the third period with a 15-point lead, 60-45. Both teams put up 19 points in the third quarter but it wasn't enough as UW put up 16 to Marquette's 17 in the final period.

Marquette used 31 second-chance points while UW only collected seven second-chance points and was outrebounded by the Golden Eagles, 50-35.

The game was high in turnovers as Wisconsin committed 17 and Marquette turned the ball over 16 times but the Golden Eagles capitalized on their opportunities, grabbing 27 points off turnovers compared to 18 for the Badgers.

Bauman led all players with 18 points while Johnson also chipped in 17. Three Badgers had a team-high five rebounds as Bauman, Cichy and Johnson each pulled down five.

Wisconsin finished shooting 38.1 percent (24-63) while Marquette shot 40.5 (30-74) percent from the field.

The Badgers return home for the first time since Nov. 18 when they host Florida on Thursday at 7 p.m. in the Kohl Center.
