MADISON, Wis. -- In a match dedicated to the Wisconsin volleyball team's lone senior, the No. 10 Badgers mirrored
Taylor Morey's tenacious play and competitive spirit by sweeping No. 16 Ohio State to pick up their 10th-straight win. Â Â
Â
In front of the fifth sold-out crowd of 6,012 this season at the UW Field House, the Badgers (22-6, 14-4 Big Ten) downed the Buckeyes 25-21, 25-16, 25-21 on Sunday afternoon.
Â
After falling to the Buckeyes (22-8, 11-7) in a five-set heartbreaker earlier in the season, Wisconsin exacted its revenge and displayed its rapid development with the sweep.
Â
"That's always a tough team to play against," UW Head Coach
Kelly Sheffield said. "It's a team that puts a lot of stress on you in a lot of different areas. They really keep you off balance with their serving. They throw a lot of different players at you and they're running a lot of different plays and I thought we battled real well today."
Â
Wisconsin hit .321 (46 kills - 12 errors - 106 total attempts) to highlight the team's balanced offense and held Ohio State to .205 (39-16-112).
Â
Junior
Haleigh Nelson was unstoppable at the net, picking up 12 kills and six blocks to lead the Badgers. Redshirt junior
Romana Kriskova followed with 10 kills while sophomore
Lauryn Gillis and freshman
Tionna Williams tallied eight kills apiece.
Â
"I'm a lot more confident than I was at the beginning of the year," Nelson said. "It wasn't so much that I was not confident but it's just been (a) growing process. My teammates really try to build me up. (
Taylor Morey) is always one of those people that is right there supporting me."
Â
On defense, Williams complemented Nelson at the net with five blocks, including one solo. Sophomore
Kelli Bates recorded 14 digs and junior
Lauren Carlini added 10 saves to guide the backcourt. Carlini also put up a match-high 38 assists.
Â
After struggling to defend a polished Buckeye attack to start the first set, Williams and Kriskova woke up the defense with a pivotal block to tie it at 12-12. Â Three more tied scores later, another Badger block combined with an OSU error put UW up 17-15. A service ace by Bates gave Wisconsin its largest lead of the set at 21-18 as it never looked back.
Â
A block solo by Williams followed by a bad set by the Buckeyes brought set point, but OSU wouldn't back down easily thanks to a kill by Taylor Sandbothe and a bad set by the Badgers. Closing out the set was Kriskova, who put it away to Wisconsin a one-set advantage.
Â
Both sides battled to start the second set thanks to accurate hitting. After six tied scores, the Badgers pulled away after a kill from Gillis sparked a 7-1 run to put UW up 20-14. A total of four different Badgers registered kills in the run as UW's balanced attack overwhelmed the OSU defense. Two straight kills by Kriskova later brought the score to 23-16 as the Buckeyes had no answer to the offensive firepower of Wisconsin. To close the set, a block by Gillis and Nelson brought set point and a Nelson kill concluded the second set on a 4-0 run.
Â
The Badgers faced a fired-up Buckeye squad in the third set. Refusing to go down without a fight, OSU fired on all cylinders to challenge the Badgers in all areas of the court. After trailing to start, a service ace by Nelson tied it up at 11 but two Buckeye blocks and a Badger error set UW back 15-12. A block by Bates and Nelson tied it up at 17 and again at 18, but an Ohio State kill and block put OSU up 20-18.
Â
With the match on the line, the Badgers stormed back with a 7-1 run to complete the sweep. Nelson's second service ace of the match following an OSU error tied the set 20, the 10
th knot of the set. A ball handling error by the Buckeyes put Wisconsin up 21-20, a lead it would not relinquish. Kills Kriskova and Williams as well as a Buckeye error brought it to set point at 24-20. Retaliating for a Sandbothe kill that extended the set, Kriskova and Williams combined for one last block that completed the sweep. Â
Â
"The journey is not over," said Morey, who was honored in a post-match ceremony. "We have a lot of games left to play but it's just awesome to see...the support behind Badger volleyball. You can't go to many schools and have 6,000 people standing and cheering in the Field House, roaring as you're announced on Senior Night. I love being a Badger and I love playing in the Field House."
Â
Up next, the Badgers welcome Rutgers to the Field House on Wednesday at 7 p.m. before traveling to No. 15 Purdue on Saturday at 3 p.m. for the Big Ten finale. The 64-team bracket for the 2015 NCAA Tournament will be announced on Nov. 29 at 8 p.m. live on ESPNU.Â
