Badgers fall to Dayton in first road challenge of season

McMorris leads Badgers with 17 points

DAYTON, Ohio – The Wisconsin women's basketball team fell to Dayton, 87-64, on Sunday in its first road test of the season.

"It's disappointing, but we're going to fix it," head coach Bobbie Kelsey said.

"We have a senior team and we're going to challenge the seniors to step up. Period."

Cayla McMorris led all players with 17 points off the bench to tie her career-high mark, as the sophomore notched three 3-point shots to lead the Badgers (1-2) in 3-pointers.

"She's a very aggressive kid," Kelsey said. "She can do a little bit of everything out there. She can shoot the 3-pointer, go to the basket.

"Cayla just plays hard, and she has the ability to make the other team have to either guard her closer so she can get closer to the rim, or they kick it out to her and she hits the shot. This is her second-straight nice game."

Senior Tessa Cichy tallied 15 points and three boards, while senior Michala Johnson recorded nearly a double-double with 12 points and nine rebounds.

Kelley Austria and Jodie Cornelie led the Flyers with 16 points apiece, while Andi Cvitkovic led the team in rebounds with seven.

Dayton (3-0) got off to hot start in the first half, nailing four 3-pointers in the first three minutes to go on a 12-0 run, forcing Wisconsin to take a timeout. Cichy knocked in a jump shot following the timeout that turned into a 3-point play cutting Dayton's lead to 12-3.

Johnson followed up with a jumper to bring the Badgers within seven (12-5) but a 6-0 run from Dayton gave the Flyers an 18-7 lead with four minutes remaining in the first quarter.

Looking to close the gap with the Flyers, the Badgers were unable to catch up as they trailed 57-35 at the half. McMorris led the Badgers with 10 points, heading into the locker room.

The Badgers were without their floor general as senior Dakota Whyte picked up her fourth personal foul in the third quarter as fouls hurt both teams throughout the game. Both teams had 27 fouls, resulting in nearly 50 free throws attempts for both teams.

Cichy found her groove in the third quarter, notching eight points in the third period after having seven tallies at the half.

Just before the end of the third quarter, Johnson spun into the lane to cut the Flyers' lead down to 20 (72-52).

The Badgers experienced the largest point-deficit in the fourth quarter, as the Flyers charged ahead 28 points (82-54) with 5:36 left in the game. Wisconsin was able to catch up only slightly, as they fell, 87-64, as the time wound down to zero.

Turnovers hurt the Badgers the entire game as they turned the ball over 26 times in the game, compared to 17 for the Flyers.

Wisconsin shot 42.1 percent (24-57) from the field and just 25 percent (5-20) from 3-point range. The Badgers also struggled from the line, hitting just 52.4 percent (11-21) in free throws. Dayton shot 40 percent (40 percent) from the field, including 47.8 percent (11-23) from 3-point range and went 24-of-27 (88.9 percent) from the free throw line. The Flyers also outrebounded the Badgers 42-38.

The Badgers continue their five-game road stretch, as they head to San Diego to play in the San Diego State Classic this weekend. Wisconsin faces Delaware on Friday in a 6 p.m. (CT) game.
