MADISON, Wis. – The Wisconsin volleyball team opened its spring season with a 27-25, 25-18, 23-25, 25-21 win over Milwaukee on Friday night in the UW Field House. The two teams also played a fifth set with Milwaukee winning 15-13.
“It was a good outing for our first spring match,” said UW head coach Pete Waite. “Milwaukee is a team that does really well in its conference. They’re scrappy; they dug a lot of balls tonight. They touch a lot of balls at the net and they come back at you with a fast transition so it really made our team pick things up.”

After a tight first set, the Badgers scored six points on service aces in the second set, led by three from Annmarie Hickey. Hickey finished with four aces in the match and led all players with 18 digs. Despite losing the third set, Wisconsin came back to win the four set behind four team blocks.
“Blocking was okay,” said Waite. “We got a little better towards the end. We shut them down a little bit but we need to close up our seams. “
Wisconsin outblocked Milwaukee 12-8, led by a match-high eight stuffs from Alexis Mitchell. The 6-0 middle blocker had four block solos. Junior Mary Ording added four blocks for the Badgers.
Mitchell was one of three UW players with double-figure kills. Freshman Ellen Chapman led all players with 18 kills while Mitchell added 15 putaways. Junior Bailey Reshel chipped in 10 kills.
Wisconsin finished with a 64-55 advantage in kills and also hit .199, compared to .149 for the Panthers. Elizabeth Egerer led Milwaukee with 16 kills.
Hickey was one of three Badger players in double figure digs. Reshel tallied a double-double, contributing 13 digs while freshman Courtney Thomas added 10 digs. Thomas put up 43 assists running the UW offense.
“We’re running a 5-1 (offense) now with Courtney Thomas (at setter),” said Waite, after his team ran a 6-2 offense last fall. “It’s different; it’s allows us to run different patterns offensively – we were able to run the slide more.”
Wisconsin continues its spring season next Saturday, competing in the Marquette Spring Invitational in Milwaukee. The Badgers will take on Green Bay, Northern Illinois, Loyola and Marquette in the tournament.
“We’ll have a lot of things to look at on video, things that we did not do so well and that we want to improve on,” said Waite. “When you’re training for the last couple of weeks against your own team, it doesn’t wake you up like it does playing an opponent.”
