RALEIGH, N.C. -- The Wisconsin volleyball team planned on ending tournament play at the N.C. State Courtyard Midtown Classic with a match against North Carolina A&T, but due to an injury, the Aggies withdrew from the tournament before Saturday morning. Despite the new opponent in Western Carolina, the Badgers still went on to sweep the Catamounts 25-12, 25-18, 25-14.

Wisconsin finished 2-1 in its tournament play and improves to 3-3 overall.

 Fast Facts
• Ohlander leads in kills, blocks, points in first start
• Badgers commit only 10 errors during the match
• UW finishes N.C. road stand 3-3

Senior co-captain Elle Ohlander shined in her first start this season, leading the Badgers in kills with seven, and total points with 9.5. Sophomore Dominique Thompson hit .455 (6-1-11) during the match to lead all players.

The Badgers hit .300 (40-10-100) as a team compared to the Catamounts' -.025 (24-27-106). Although UW only hit .190 (13-5-42) in the first set, Western Carolina committed two more errors in set one alone than the Badgers did during the entire match.

Wisconsin put points together numerous times throughout the three sets thanks to both capitalizing on WCU's errors and scoring consecutive kills. Freshmen Crystal Graff and Courtney Thomas teamed up on a kill to start a 4-0 run after the Catamounts scored their first point of the match. Then senior Janelle Gabrielsen assisted on three straight kills to put the Badgers up by six at 7-1. Gabrielsen led UW in assists with 16.

The Catamounts got a little closer to the Badgers in the second set, trailing by as few as four points. Despite that, UW dominated from the beginning, starting things off with a kill by Ohlander from Gabrielsen. The senior co-captains combined for two straight kills later in the set, which gave the Badgers an eight-point lead, their highest that set.

The two also combined on the first Wisconsin point of the third set before Western Carolina scored two straight points for its first lead of the match. The only lead changes and tie scores came in the beginning of set three until freshman Ellen Chapman chipped in a kill to make the score 4-3 in favor of UW.

The Badgers then pulled away from the Catamounts, only letting them come within three points. Western Carolina did come back toward the end of the set, as it took Wisconsin four match points to finally score.

UW finishes its portion of the N.C. State Courtyard Midtown Classic 2-1. Ohlander and Graff received all-tournament honors for Wisconsin.

The Badgers will now return home to start the new school year before heading back east for the Rhode Island Invitational next weekend. Wisconsin squares off against Boston College and host-Rhode Island on Friday before taking on Columbia Saturday morning.
