RALEIGH, N.C. -- Going to its bench didn't stop the Wisconsin volleyball team from sweeping Campbell in the first round of the N.C. State Invitational on Friday morning. The Badgers, who played 16 of 17 athletes, won 25-17, 25-13, 25-18.
Wisconsin (2-2) dominated the net, hitting .376 as a team and putting away 48 kills. Freshman Crystal Graff led all players with 12 kills while senior Janelle Gabrielsen added eight kills. Ten Badgers tallied at least one kill. Sophomore Dominique Thompson hit an impressive .833 (5-0-6) percent in the middle.
Freshman Courtney Thomas put up 21 assists while Gabrielsen had 19 assists.
Campbell (2-3) totaled just 24 kills, led by Jordan Reaves with eight, and hit .103.
The Wisconsin defense halted the Camels offense as UW had 11 team blocks and 44 digs. Junior Kristy Bourquin led all players with four block solos while Gabrielsen and senior Elle Ohlander added three stuffs apiece. Sophomore Annemarie Hickey recorded 18 digs to lead all players while Graff chipped in nine saves.
The Badgers scored on five service aces while giving up only three service errors.
Wisconsin broke open the first set, going on a 6-0 run to take a 13-7 lead. Thompson had two kills and a block to key the run. The Badgers upped their lead to 20-10 off two kills from Alexis Mitchell to put the set out of range.
In the second set, the Badger duo of Gabrielsen and Thomas keyed a 4-0 run to give Wisconsin an 8-4 lead. Thomas set up two Gabrielsen kills and the freshman also added a service ace. UW substituted liberally the rest of the set and won easily.
The Badgers trailed 8-2 in the third set, primarily due to unforced hitting errors, but rallied to tie the set at 14. Wisconsin outscored the Camels 4-0, taking a 18-14 lead that put the set and the match away.
Wisconsin continues tournament play tonight with a match vs. N. C. State at 4:30 p.m. CT.
