HOUGHTON, Mich. -- Wisconsin (1-3-0, 0-2-0 WCHA) fought back from 1-0 and 2-1 deficits to get to its third overtime in four contests, but a Michigan Tech (4-0-0, 2-0-0 WCHA) goal just 20 seconds into e extra session handed the Badgers a 3-2 defeat on Saturday.
The Badgers allowed the first goal of the game for the fourth time in four games this season. The Huskies grabbed the lead at 9:02 of the first period when Tanner Kero scored with a deflection of a point shot while on the power play. Daniel Sova took the original shot, while Riley Sweeney got the second assist.
Michigan Tech nearly made it 2-0 early in the second period, getting a puck into the net behind Wisconsin freshman goaltender Joel Rumpel (Swift Current, Saskatchewan), but the goal was waived off when officials ruled an MTU player skated into the goaltender before the puck crossed over the line.
The Badgers evened the score at 9:49 of the second stanza when sophomore forward Keegan Meuer (Madison, Wis.) converted his own rebound. Meuer, in the slot, took a feed from sophomore Gavin Hartzog (Pewaukee, Wis.). Meuer then hit the post with a wrist shot, before knocking home his own rebound on the backhand. Frosh forward Brad Navin (Waupaca, Wis.) earned his first career point with the second assist.

The Huskies regained the lead with their second power-play tally of the contest. Jacob Johnston whiffed on a redirection attempt of a Blake Pietila shot, but the puck bounced off his leg and past Rumpel for a 2-1 Tech lead. The goal, at 3:31 of the third period, was also helped by Steven Seigo.
A five-minute major power play appeared to be a golden opportunity for UW to even the game, but the Badgers failed to generate much in the way of chances. Then an apparent tying goal by junior defenseman Justin Schultz (West Kelowna, British Columbia) was disallowed when a Badger interfered with MTU netminder Josh Robinson at the top of the crease.
The Badgers finally got back even at 17:53 when sophomore forward Tyler Barnes (Eagan, Minn.) knocked home a centering pass by sophomore forward Mark Zengerle (Rochester, N.Y.). Zengerle skated wide around a Michigan Tech defenseman to get room to make the pass.
The goal got the Badgers to their third overtime in the four-game old 2011-12 season, and the game ended in familiar fashion. For the second consecutive night, MTU got the winner. Twenty seconds into overtime, Rumpel swiped his stick in attempt to knock the puck from Brett Olson coming out from behind the net. Instead, Olson avoided the check and beat a compromised Rumpel for the game-winner.
The Badgers finished 0-for-5 on the power play and killed one of three Michigan Tech power plays.
Rumpel absorbed the loss and fell to 1-1-0 with his 25-save effort. MTU's Robinson improved to 3-0-0 with 21 saves on the night.
The Badgers return home to the Kohl Center next weekend for a two-game series against North Dakota. Wisconsin and UND meet Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m. each evening.
