MADISON, Wis. -- No opponent was a match for the Wisconsin men’s rowing team this Sunday as it went undefeated in varsity races and swept the top three places in every men’s event at the Head of the Iowa.
“The regatta had been cancelled the last two years due to flooding and it was nice to have it back,” head coach Chris Clark stated. “It is a fun course to row on and we got to row out of the brand new Iowa boathouse, which was really a fantastic facility.”
The men’s varsity eight took the first four places out of eight in the race. The Wisconsin A boat (see below for lineups) came in first in 10:56.871, followed by Wisconsin B in 10:57.995, and Wisconsin C in 11:08.658.
UW dominated the varsity four race as well, placing first through sixth in the 13-boat race. The Wisconsin A boat placed first in 11:49.453, the Wisconsin B boat came in 11:55.160, and Wisconsin C finished in 12:05.410.
Power pair Max Goff and Tim Aghai from the first-place Head of the Charles boat last weekend took the gold in the open pair in 12:48.047. They were followed by nine consecutive Badger boats, a lone Minnesota crew, and a final UW boat to round out the competition.
Clark commented on Goff after the race, highlighting his accomplishments so far.
“He was in the varsity eight that won, the coxed four that won and the pair that won today,” Clark noted. “He also stroked the Head of the Charles four, so he is having a good fall so far.”
The UW novice crew seems to be developing nicely as well, and the Head of the Iowa was a confidence-boosting experience for the young crew as well, as Wisconsin took the first three spots in the novice eight and the first five in the novice four.
“It was a lot of fun, especially for the freshmen,” Clark remarked. “For the freshmen to get any kind of experience in is very helpful.”
The Wisconsin A boat placed first in the novice eight in 11:55.316, followed by Wisconsin B, finishing in 11:56.050 and Wisconsin C in 12:20.089.
In the novice four, the Wisconsin A boat finished first in 12:49.387, Wisconsin B in 12:59.983, and Wisconsin C in 13:00.644.
Throughout the entire regatta, Badger boats were only beaten twice by opponents, once in the open pair by Minnesota and again by the Golden Gophers in the novice four.
The men return to the water next Sunday, Nov. 1 at the American Heritage Regatta in Wyandotte, Michigan.
