Varsity eight leads the way with 11th-place finish
WORCESTER, Mass. – Wisconsin men's rowing took 12th in the battle for the Rowe Cup, with its varsity eight placing 11th in its event to lead the Badgers at the 2026 Eastern Association of Rowing Colleges Championships on Lake Quinsigamond. Also called the Eastern Sprints, the event serves as Wisconsin's conference championships.
The varsity eight had the best result of the day, finishing 11th with a fifth-place finish in the petite final. Seeded No. 12 coming into the Sprints, the Badgers were fourth in their heat, before clocking 5:42.951 over 2000 meters to grab fifth in the petite final.
UW's second varsity eight ended up 12th with a sixth-place result in the petite final.
The third varsity eight took 15th with third place in the third-level final. UW also entered a varsity four and placed fifth.

Head Coach Beau Hoopman
"The 1V is close to having a breakthrough; as a group, we've worked on being more aggressive at the start and that translated into being a lot closer to the leaders through the body of the race. Still need to work on the midway reset and the end sprint to stay with the boats that are making a play for the front of the pack. It's a different level, but we're getting there. It's a relatively young group, so they should be able to make some big strides in the next two weeks if we gain an at-large bid to the national championship tomorrow."
Varsity Eight Coxswain Charlie Ramquist
"Competition was strong today, but the guys did a great job to put themselves in the races and compete with every stroke. We made improvements over both races and we'll be able to keep building on that for the next two weeks into IRAs."
Varsity Eight Stroke Ethan Schumacher
"We did a good job with our starts being in the race with the top crews today. We need to continue pushing our base pace and really changing speed in the last 500."
Up Next: The Badgers hope to earn a bid to the national championships when the field gets announced on Monday. If they do, they'll compete at the 2026 IRA National Championships set for May 29-31 on Lake Natoma in Gold River, California.
