Former Badger rower and coach set for Madison homecoming
MADISON, Wis. — Greg Myhr, former member of Wisconsin men's crew as both a coach and rower, is joining the Badger's coaching staff for the 2026-27 season.
"Our program is excited to welcome Greg Myhr '92 back to Madison as our Associate Head Coach," head coach Beau Hoopman said.
"Coach Myhr's connection to Wisconsin runs deep. As a former captain and coach, he understands the tradition, expectations and values that have defined this program for generations. His experience has taken him across every level of the sport and he returns with a wealth of knowledge that will immediately strengthen our staff and provide tremendous value to our student-athletes."
Myhr boasts nearly 30 years of collegiate coaching experience, including the last seven years as head coach at Marietta College— a university that Wisconsin annually races.
His coaching career got its start at Wisconsin, running 1995-2003 in Madison, before he took over the Georgetown heavyweight program for two years.
As a Badger coach, he helped UW claim five Ten Eyck Trophies as team points champion at the Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) National Championships. He spent much of his first stint in Madison directing the freshmen crew and led them to four IRA freshman four titles. His freshman eight captured the school's only IRA title in the event history in 2000.
Two years at Georgetown led to four years at George Washington, where he directed the Colonials to as high as No. 12 in the national rankings.
He moved along to six seasons leading the University of Pennsylvania, helping that program reach as high as 10th in the Ten Eyck Trophy standings at the 2015 IRAs, with the varsity eight matching a program-best 11th-place. The program captured the Chapman Team Trophy that same season as the most improved team in the country.
He followed up his time at Penn with two years as an assistant coach at St. Joseph's University. During that tenure, he was part of the coaching staff at the 2016 World Under-23 Championships, helping direct the Americans to seven place in the men's single and 13th in the men's lightweight double.
Myhr also spent 2017 through 2019 as head coach for Cambridge Boat Club, highlighted by the club's junior women claiming three gold medals at the 2018 Canadian Henley.
Before all of his coaching experience, Myhr was once a Badger himself, having captained Wisconsin as a senior in 1992. His varsity eight that year reached the IRA Grand Final. He also owns a pair of IRA runner-up finishes with the second varsity eight in 1991 and straight four in 1990, while his freshman eight took third in 1989.
"I've long been profoundly grateful for the opportunity I had to row with such amazing people in college – and then to work with unparalleled coaches and athletes as a coach here," Myhr said. "It feels almost unbelievable that I get to come back for more."
During his time rowing at UW, he won the Norm Sonju Award for his outstanding contribution to the team's success. He graduated with a degree in philosophy.
Outside of rowing, the Bethesda, Maryland, native has competed in 19 American Birkebeiners since 1996, as well as the 2002 Wisconsin Ironman Triathlon. He's also raced in the Head of the Charles on 27 occasions since 1987,
