Schmeling places sixth in decathlon while Gleeson runs under-20 standard in 5K
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – The Wisconsin men's track and field team wrapped up competition at the Illini Deca-Jam on Friday, highlighted by a sixth-place finish from Jack Schmeling in the decathlon while a pair of unattached freshmen earned under-20 qualifying marks.
Schemling totaled 5554 points across the two-day competition to place sixth in the decathlon. The freshman recorded a pair of top-four finishes on the final day, placing third in the discus with a mark of 136 feet, 3 inches 136-03 (41.35m) and fourth in the javelin with a throw of 167-8 (51.12m). The Onalaska, Wisconsin native added a sixth-place finish in the 1500 meters, crossing the line in 5 minutes, 1.40 seconds and took eighth in the 110-meter hurdles in 15.90.
Robin Ott did not finish the decathlon after competing on the opening day.
Darius Jones II posted a score of 7,129 points in the decathlon to place fifth overall, surpassing the standard for the World U-20 Championships of 7100.
Three-time Olympian Zach Ziemek finished runner-up with a score of 7,891 points.
Freshman Cillina Gleeson delivered a standout performance at the UW-Platteville Invite, winning the 5000 meters in 13:54.27. Competing unattached, Gleeson's time marked a significant personal best, shaving more than 20 seconds off his previous mark of 14:19 and dipped under the World Athletics U-20 qualifying standard of 14:08.00 for the World U-20 Championships, set for August in Eugene, Oregon.
Up Next: The Badgers return to action on Saturday in the pole vault at 1:15 p.m. on the third day of the Illini-Deca Jam.
