Wisconsin kicks off first day of NCAA Championships

School-record setting Badger relay earns Honorable Mention All-American
ATLANTA — The Wisconsin men's swim team wrapped up the first day of competition at the NCAA Championships in Atlanta, highlighted by an All-American honor in the 800 freestyle relay.
Wisconsin opened competition with a showing in the 200 medley relay in the morning's preliminary session. The relay crew of Nathan Welker, Ben Wiegand, Charlie Jones and Cooper Scharff covered the distance in 1:24.19, with three of the four setting lifetime best splits.
To close out the night, the Badgers came out of the gates in the 800 freestyle relay to set a new school record by just over a tenth of a second. The quartet of Enzo Solitario, Luukas Vainio, Yoav Romano and Dominik Mark Torok put together a 6:08.72 finish, earning a ninth place finish and an Honorable Mention All-American honor.
Competition will resume tomorrow morning with the 100 butterfly, 400 IM, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke and 200 freestyle relay. Prelims begin at 9 a.m. (CT) and finals start at 5 p.m. (CT).
