No. 9 Illinois defeats No. 30 Wisconsin, 4-1
MADISON, Wis. - The No. 30 Wisconsin men's tennis team (11-3, 2-2 Big Ten) was bested by No. 9 Illinois (14-3, 4-0 Big Ten) on Sunday afternoon. Illinois claimed the doubles point and earned wins at No. 1, No. 4 and No. 6 singles on its way to victory.Â
Illinois took the early 1-0 lead with victories at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles. Wisconsin's Ferdinand Kloesters and Michael Minasyan suffered their first loss of the spring to Illinois' top pairing. Tyler Bowers and Gabriel Debru secured the point for Illinois with a 6-4 victory over Matthew Fullerton and Patrik Meszaros.
In singles play, Illinois earned straight set victories at No. 1 and No. 6 singles.Â
Sophomore Ferdinand Kloesters secured Wisconsin's lone point with a straight set victory over No. 70 ranked Will Mroz. Kloesters' first ranked win of his career was also his tenth dual victory this spring.
Edouard Aubert, Patrik Meszaros and Tomas Zlatohlavek all forced third sets on their respective courts. Ultimately it was Illinois' Adam Jilly who earned a victory over Aubert to clinch the match for the Illini.Â
Wisconsin is 11-3 and 2-2 in the Big Ten.
Up Next: The Badgers head to the west coast for matches against No. 26 UCLA and No. 25 USC next weekend. First serve for Friday's match against the Bruins is scheduled for noon CT
