Super Swarens: Jason Swarens claims shot put crown at Big Tens

Senior completes Big Ten shot put sweep on Saturday

EUGENE, Ore. – Wisconsin men's track and field standout Jason Swarens won the shot put to highlight action for the Badgers on Saturday at the 2025 Big Ten Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

Swarens Takes Home Gold
A year after not making finals in the shot put at Big Ten Outdoors, senior Jason Swarens found redemption on Saturday, winning the Big Ten outdoor shot put title at Hayward Field.

A native of Terre Haute, Indiana, Swarens led from the jump of the competition en route to completing the sweep of Big Ten indoor and outdoor titles. Swarens ended the meet with a toss of 67 feet, 4 ½ inches (20.53 meters) to become the first Badger since Anders Holmstrom in 2000 to win a Big Ten outdoor shot put crown.

"Going into my last throw, I knew that I had won it," Swarens said. "I was in the mindset that I needed one further, so I kept that mindset and got in the ring. I got the crowd involved and used that energy, and launched one out there."

It marks Swarens' second stellar performance in Eugene in the last year as he was runner-up in the shot at the 2024 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. Swarens enters the postseason with the No. 1 throw in the country of 70-1 1/2 (21.37m) set at the Badger Challenge earlier this month.

Swarens was joined on the podium by fellow senior Andrew Stone, who took sixth with a heave of 61-9 (18.82 meters).

Four Advance to Sunday's Finals
All four Badgers that were in prelims on Saturday all punched their tickets to final events on Sunday afternoon.

Jalen Williams dominated his section of the 400 meters, finishing in 46.18 seconds to win his heat and advance to Sunday's final that will take place at 3:32 p.m. CT. His time was the third-fastest of the afternoon.

Gio Wearing also advanced to the finals in the 110 hurdles after clocking a 13.62, the fourth-fastest time of the competition. The Big Ten runner-up in the 110 hurdles a year ago, Wearing will race on Sunday at 3:18 p.m. CT

Andrew Casey and Patrick Hilby each picked up time qualifiers in the 800 meters. Casey finished second in his section in 1:47.83, a season-best time and the fifth-fastest time of the meet. Hilby took third in his section in 1:48.01 to advance to Sunday's final at 1:58 p.m. CT

Gilles Scores in Steeplechase
Freshman Nick Gilles made his Big Ten steeplechase debut, finishing eighth in 8:47.40 to pick up a point for UW. The Minnetonka, Minnesota, native owns a season-best time of 8:38.91 set last month at the Penn Relays.

Up Next: The Badgers will wrap up their time at the Big Ten Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Sunday at Hayward Field. Action will begin at Noon CT with the women's javelin. Fans can watch the action live on Big Ten Network starting at 2:30 p.m. CT while the meet will stream live on Big Ten Plus and RunnerSpace.
