Wisconsin wins two out of three events in season-opener

FAIRFAX, Va. - The Wisconsin women's lightweight rowing team started its season off well against No. 4 Georgetown, beating the Hoyas in two of the three races.

HOW IT HAPPENED: The Badgers started the day with the varsity double crew earning a commanding victory. The duo of Abbey DiChiara and Romy McCarthy showed out, winning the double scull race by almost 12 seconds. They posted a final time of 7:52.8 over 2000 meters

The varsity four squad also came away with the victory in their race, however this one came down to the finish, as the Badgers pulled out the win with just over four seconds of a gap. The lineup of Emilie Rochon, Charlotte Mirzaian, Anika Hanson, Gracie Walker, and Adeline Hinkie made the most of their first race of the season, posting a final time of 7:38.2.

The final race of the day was the varsity eight where Georgetown came away with the win. The Badgers battled to the very end making it a close finish, but ultimately came up just short, conceding the race to the Hoyas.

From the Shore
Lightweight coach Hadzo "Hodge" Habibovic

"I'm really proud of what we accomplished today. This was our first race of the season and we had a few focuses that we wanted to execute and I think our team did a great job of doing just that. Winning two of the three events was a good start. It's our first data point of the season so we are feeling excited and more confident about the coming weeks. We will have three more opportunities to line up against Georgetown this season and we will see a few other lightweight teams next weekend. It was a great day to be a Badger."

UP NEXT:  The Badgers will race in the Knecht Cup next weekend in Cherry Hill, New Jersey. There will be multiple teams there with some stiff competition for Wisconsin. The race begins on Saturday, April 12, and finishes on Sunday, April 13.
