MADISON, Wis. – After winning its series against Indiana, the Wisconsin softball team (26-16, 8-8) takes on North Dakota State Wednesday in a double-header. Â
Game one begins at 3 p.m., with the second game beginning at 5:30 p.m. (CT) or 30 minutes after the completion of game one.
1. INDIANA RECAP – Last time out, Wisconsin took two-of-three games against the Indiana Hoosiers at Goodman Diamond. Wisconsin earned victories in games one and three, serving as the team's ninth and 10th wins against the Hoosiers in the last 12 home matchups. Game one saw the Badgers outpace Indiana, maintaining a 6-5 lead at the end of the game. Game three saw UW get out to an early 8-2 start, before ultimately winning 10-5.
2. PLENTY OF POP – Wisconsin hit four home runs over the weekend, with the bulk of them coming in crucial moments. Up 4-3 in game one, Hilary Blomberg provided much-needed Insurance with a two-run home run, ultimately serving as the deciding hit in a 6-5 game. Tied up 2-2 in game three, Dani Lucey gave the Badgers the lead with her seventh home run of the season. One inning later, Emmy Wells broke the game open with a grand slam - the fourth of the year for Wisconsin. Â
3. ENTERING THE RECORD BOOK – Wells' and Blomberg's home runs were notable for other reasons as well. Blomberg's home run was the 10th of the season, making her the 16th player to hit 10 or more home runs in a single season. With 12 games remaining in the regular season, Blomberg has a chance to catch up to Kayla Konwent's single season record of 15 home runs. Wells' grand slam was her 20th home run with Wisconsin, becoming the 12th player in program history to hit 20 or more home runs - doing so in just two seasons.
4. LEWIS LIGHTS IT UP – Freshman Kendra Lewis continues to have a stellar debut season, riding a five-game hit streak. Lewis went 5-for-9 against the Hoosiers, bringing up her season average to .405. Lewis is chasing the freshman batting average record of .365, set by Hilary Blomberg last season. If her numbers were to hold, Lewis would also set the freshman records for slugging percentage (.619), and OPS (1.065).
5. NORTH DAKOTA STATE – This Wednesday is a double-header against North Dakota State, who sport a 16-22 record coming into Goodman, most recently dropping a close series to North Dakota. NDSU has played three other games against Big Ten Opponents this season, losing in all of them to Indiana and Minnesota. Senior infielder Chloe Woldruff leads the team with a .320 batting average, and has hits in 20 of her last 23 games. Wisconsin and NDSU have faced off eight times before, all coming between 2005 and 2008. The series is tied 4-4, with UW holding a 3-1 edge in Madison.
