Uchenna’s double-double shines as Wisconsin battles in overtime loss
MILWAUKEE, Wis. - The Wisconsin women's basketball team (1-1, 0-0 Big Ten) battled on the road but came up just short in a 65–62 overtime loss to Marquette (2-0, 0-0 Big East). The Badgers led for more than 36 minutes of game time but couldn't fend off a late Golden Eagles push that forced overtime.
Wisconsin finished the night shooting 23-of-66 (35%), including six three-pointers and a 10-for-14 showing from the free-throw line. Gift Uchenna recorded a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds, while Kyrah Daniels paced the Badgers with 17 points. Destiny Howell added 14, hitting three triples in the first half.
How it happened:
The Badgers came out swinging, opening the first quarter with a 20–12 lead fueled by quick scoring bursts from Daniels and Howell. Wisconsin hit three triples in the first frame and forced seven Marquette turnovers. Howell added nine points in the first seven minutes, helping UW create separation.
Wisconsin stretched its lead to double digits multiple times in the second quarter, including a 29–19 advantage after another Howell three. Daniels sank back-to-back threes during an early second-quarter surge, and the Badgers carried a 33–26 lead into halftime, shooting 38% while knocking down six first-half threes.
After the break, both teams traded defensive stops. Wisconsin held Marquette to nine points in the third quarter, with Uchenna and Laci Steele providing key buckets to maintain a 42–35 edge heading into the fourth.
Momentum shifted late in regulation, as Marquette outscored Wisconsin 24–17 in the fourth quarter, connecting on eight field goals and seven free throws. Steele kept the Badgers afloat with a six-point run, but a late Golden Eagles push tied the game at 59–59 to force overtime.
In overtime, Wisconsin struggled to find the bottom of the net. Ronnie Porter's bucket and free throw got UW on the board, but Marquette's timely scoring sealed the 65–62 final.
