Potter earns the Badgers the extra point
ST. CLOUD, Minn. — The Badgers secured a shootout win after a close game against No. 10/12 St. Cloud State this Saturday, officially ending in a 4-4 tie.
The two team's battled in regulation, with three ties occurring in that time. Both competitors combined for six goals across the final two periods, with the Huskies tying things up at four apiece with four minutes remaining - converting on a late power play opportunity.
After a scoreless overtime period, the game went to shootout. In the sudden-death portion of the shootout, the Badgers finally ended the game when Laney Potter scored UW's second goal compared to St. Cloud State's one.
The Huskies were the first team to strike in the game,scoring within the first seven minutes. Wisconsin responded later when freshman Charlotte Pieckenhagen finished off a breakaway from McKayla Zilisch and Hannah Halverson.
When the Badgers went on the power play early on in the second, sophomore Maggie Scanell found the back of the net in a scramble for the puck. Scanell made the scoreboard 2-1 for Wisconsin.
With 4:17 remaining in the second period, Kirsten Simms collected her 200th career point and scored the Badger's third goal of the game. Before the Badgers could escape into the third period with a two-goal lead, the Huskies found the back of the net with just two minutes remaining in the period.
After a major penalty from the Huskies, the Badgers went on a five-minute power play with 13:05 left in the third. UW got called for an interference penalty seconds later, allowing St. Cloud to tie things up with an even-strength goal.
Wisconsin went back on the power play, with Gorbatenko finding a loose puck off of a rebound to make it, 4-3. The lead was short-lived however, with the Huskies capitalizing on a power play of their own with 3:54 remaining.
The squads went into a scoreless overtime session before Potter earned the extra point for the Badgers for a shootout win.
Wisconsin outshot St. Cloud 56-38, its highest shot total of the season.
