Five things to know: Badgers look to punch their ticket to NCAA Championships

UW will travel to Evansville for the NCAA Great Lakes Regional
MADISON, Wis. – The Wisconsin women's cross country team will travel to Evansville, Indiana for the NCAA Great Lakes Regional race. The race will be held on Friday, Nov. 14 at the Angel Mounds State Historic Site. The women's 6K is set to start at 10:00 a.m. CT.
1. LAST TIME OUT: The Badgers finished sixth overall at Big Ten Championships with 164 points. Oregon came in first with 18 points, followed by Penn State with 78 points. Mikaela Helling was the first Badger to finish, followed by Kylie Finger who finished 30th and Nora Gremban finishing in 34th.
2. HELLING HITS HER STRIDE: Mikaela Helling led the Badgers at Big Tens running her personal best of 20 minutes and 33.2 seconds finishing in 21st, surpassing her previous personal best at the 2024 Big Tens where she placed 106th. Helling shaved over 47 seconds off of her finishing time from the 2025 Nuttycombe Invitational where she placed 122nd. Helling earned off course honors, being awarded the Wisconsin's Big Ten Sportsmanship Honoree.
3. RACE REWIND: UW finished in second last year at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional race, falling to Notre Dame and finishing three points ahead of Toledo. The Badgers had a strong showing at regionals, as three runners ran sub 20 minute 6Ks and five runners placed in the top-30, including Nora Gremban with a time of 19:59.8 placing 16th, Bella Jacobsen, covering the 6K course in 19:59.9 coming in 17th and Mya Bunke finishing in 20th, running the course in 20:42.2. Gremban and Jacobsen earned all region honors in addition to two former Badgers.
4. CLIMBING THE LADDER: The Badgers are ranked No. 25 going into regionals, No. 3 in the region, behind No. 5 Notre Dame and No. 23 Michigan State. UW faced five teams in the Great Lakes Region at the Nuttycombe Invitational, Notre Dame, Michigan State, Toledo, Michigan and Indiana. Notre Dame placed second, MSU placed 15th. Toledo in 21st, Michigan finishing in 25th and Indiana in 30th.
5. WHAT'S AT STAKE: The Badgers will look to book their ticket to travel to Columbia, Mo. for the NCAA Championships if they put up a quality performance. The top-2 teams earn automatic bids from each region and 14 teams will be selected at large for their season performance. The national championship race is on Saturday Nov. 22 and the 6K is scheduled to start at 9:30 a.m. CT at the Gans Creek Cross Country Course (3350 E Gans Road). The Badgers finished in 22nd last season at the national championships that were hosted at the Zimmer Championship Course.
