No. 2 Badgers hustle No. 10 Huskies, 5-2

UW completes season sweep of SCSU

MADISON, Wis. – Earning their 11th win in a row, the second-ranked Wisconsin women's hockey team scored three times in the third period to overpower No. 10 St. Cloud State, 5-2, on Sunday night at LaBahn Arena.

Laney Potter tallied a pair of goals, while Kelly Gorbatenko, Caroline Harvey and Lacey Eden each lit the lamp as the Badgers (24-4-0, 17-4-0-1-1-0 WCHA) completed the season sweep of the Huskies (15-12-1, 10-10-1-0-2-0 WCHA).

The Huskies struck first, but not long before Gorbatenko tipped in a rebound from a Laila Edwards shot, tying things up halfway through the first.

Tallying her second top-shelf score of the weekend, Harvey gave the Badgers the lead after capitalizing on the power play in the second slate.

Potter scored back-to-back to give UW a 4-1 lead, but the Huskies were able to take advantage of a Wisconsin penalty to answer back.

With just under four minutes left St. Cloud State pulled their goaltender, giving Eden the opportunity to tally an empty netter.

Ava McNaughton stopped 23 of the shots she faced for her 12th win of the year.

Three Notes of the Game
- After collecting three assists in Sunday's win, Casey O'Brien is two assists away from becoming the 10th player in school history to record 100 assists as a Badger.
- Reigning WCHA Forward of the Week, Lacey Eden, posted her second four-point weekend in a row after grabbing a goal and three assists in the sweep over the Huskies.
- Wisconsin has won 19 in a row against St. Cloud State when playing at LaBahn Arena, dating all the way back to the 2014-2015 season. UW is now 99-9-4 against SCSU.

Head Coach Mark Johnson
On the competitive weekend:

"It was very competitive. I thought we managed the puck better tonight. There's some things I can take out of this weekend that will make us better as we get into our last six games."

On Caroline Harvey's two-goal weekend:
"She's a player that likes to score. You saw her reaction last night, you saw her reaction again. It makes me think of Alexander Ovechkin, he scored over 700 or 800 goals and even when he scores nowadays, he still gets excited. So hopefully that helps with her confidence and as she starts to come back and get close to 100%, she's doing things like she did this week."

Junior forward Lacey Eden
On the growing momentum:

"We're definitely building on every game. We've had a couple really tough battles too so that shows our perseverance. It builds confidence going into these last few series. we're going to be ready to take on that challenge."

Freshman defender Laney Potter
On the upcoming games:

"We have some hard weekends coming up, so this has been a great buildup for us. We have to continue it."

On overcoming SCSU's physicality:
"Their really big thing is physicality. Our thing is skill, we just had to outwork them with skill and I think we did that tonight."

Up Next: Wisconsin will take its talents to northern Minnesota next weekend to take on Bemidji State at the Sanford Center. Puck drop on Friday is set for 6 p.m. with Saturday's game beginning at 3 p.m. Fans can watch the action on Big Ten Plus or listen to both games on The Game 1070 AM.
