UW coach notches 14th conference title in 17 years
MADISON, Wis - Director of Track & Field and Cross Country Mick Byrne has been named the Big Ten men's cross country coach of the year after a first-place finish at the Big Ten Championships on Friday, Nov. 1.
In his 17 seasons at Wisconsin, Byrne has brought home a conference championship 14 separate times. Friday marked the seventh-straight conference title for the men's team, as they outlasted No. 12 Washington and No. 15 Oregon to secure gold.
Led by the likes of the lone four-time individual Big Ten champion at Wisconsin, Bob Liking, the No. 9 Badgers went on to score 46 points. Liking earned some help from fellow First Team All-Big Ten honorees Christian de Vaal and Matan Irvi, a pair of freshman standouts.
Johnny Livingstone and Rowen Ellenberg each finished within the top-15 individuals to power the Badgers to a win at the Orange and Blue Golf Course in Urbana-Champaign, Ill., adding on to another stellar season.
Throughout his 17 years in Madison, Byrne has tallied one national championship and helped produce multiple Olympians during his tenure as a Badger.
Fans can catch Byrne and the Badgers back out on the course on Friday, Nov. 15, at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional, as they look to earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Championships in the following week. The regional meet will be hosted in Norton, Ohio, at Silver Creek Metro Park. The women's race is set to get started at 10:00 a.m. CT, with the men's competition slated for 11:00 a.m. CT.
