Badgers secure Sweet 16 berth with shootout win

No. 5 Wisconsin takes down No. 4 Virginia to advance in NCAA Tournament

IRVINE, Calif. – The No. 5-seeded Wisconsin women's soccer team triumphed over No. 4 Virginia, winning 4-2 in penalty kicks during the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The victory marks the Badgers' 19th appearance at this stage.

With the win, Wisconsin advances to its fifth NCAA Tournament Sweet 16, where they will face either No. 1 USC or Saint Louis on Sunday, Nov. 24.

How it Happened
First Half

Wisconsin and Virginia entered the match on equal footing, setting the stage for a tight battle in the midfield during the early minutes.

The Badgers quickly turned up the pressure, earning both a free kick and a corner within the first 10 minutes to challenge the Cavaliers' defense.

By the middle of the half, momentum clearly shifted toward Wisconsin, with Ella Ottey and Ashley Martinez leading the attack and generating attempts on goal.

Although the game remained scoreless, the Badgers dominated the offensive pace in the first half, outshooting Virginia 4-2 and keeping the Cavaliers on the defensive.

Second Half
Virginia came out strong in the second half with an aggressive offensive push, but an offsides call on the Cavaliers disrupted their momentum and shifted the focus back to midfield play.

Wisconsin's defense stayed resilient, highlighted by goalkeeper Drew Stover making a key save in the 58th minute to maintain the 0-0 score. As the half progressed, Virginia began to find their rhythm, matching Wisconsin's shot total at four, creating a more balanced contest.

The Cavaliers capitalized on a critical 6-2 advantage in corner kicks, ultimately pushing the game into overtime.

Overtime
The equality of the teams was evident going into extra time, with Wisconsin holding a narrow 5-4 edge in shots.

After 20 minutes of overtime without a goal, the match went to a shootout.

The Badgers won in PK's, 4-2, with successful penalty kicks from Hailey Baumann, Erin Connolly, Aryssa Mahrt, and Ella Ottey. Drew Stover made a save.
