Five Things to Know: Wisconsin vs. Penn State

Badgers back on the road on Tuesday

MADISON, Wis. — Winners of six straight and 12 of its last 13 games, Wisconsin plays at Penn State on Tuesday night. Tip is set for 8 p.m. (CT) on Big Ten Network.

1. LAST TIME OUT

Wisconsin used a 13-1 run late in the first half to grab a 7-point halftime lead and would never trail again in a 71-63 win at the Kohl Center.

The Badgers held the Wildcats without a field goal for the final 4:16, outscoring them 10-2 to close the game.

Max Klesmit scored a game-high 24 points (5-7 3FGs) as the Badgers hit 7-of-14 3FGs on the day.

UW went 20-for-26 (76.9%) from the free throw line and out-rebounded NU, 31-24.

2. SERIES HISTORY

Tuesday’s game against the Nittany Lions marks the 56th meeting between Wisconsin and Penn State. UW owns a 44-11 edge in the all-time series.

The Badgers have won five straight against PSU and 18 of the last 19 dating back to 2012.

The Badgers are 11-1 against Penn State under head coach Greg Gard, with the lone loss coming in 2021 in University Park. UW is 5-1 at the Bryce Jordan Center under Gard.

UW has won nine of its last 10 trips to University Park, Pa. and is 19-8 all-time at Penn State.

3. BIG TEN BEASTS

Greg Gard has Wisconsin off to a 5-0 start in Big Ten play for the first time since opening the 2007-08 season. The Badgers went on to post a 16-2 league record that season en route to winning the Big Ten title.

UW has won four of its five Big Ten games by double figures and led wire-to-wire in two of them.

During Big Ten play, UW has trailed for a total of just 2:55 in the second half of games.

In Big Ten play, UW is averaging 76.6 points per game (5th in the Big Ten) and lead the league shooting 50% (132-264 FG). Wisconsin ranks third in B1G play shooting 40.6% 3FG.

4. QUALITY COMPETITION & RESUME

Wisconsin begins the week at No. 11 in the latest NET Rankings (through games played Jan. 14), going 8-3 overall in Quad 1+2 games (4-3 in Quad 1).

The Badgers have eight wins in Quads 1 and 2, joining Purdue (9) as the only schools with eight or more quality wins.

UW is also one of just nine programs with at least four Quad 1 wins. Only Purdue (6), Arizona (5), Kansas (5) & North Carolina (5) have more.

Conversely, Wisconsin has no bad losses with all three in Quad 1 from teams ranked in NET top 70: Arizona (2), Tennessee (6) and Providence (69).

5. MAX-IMUM EFFORT

Klesmit dropped 24 points in UW's win vs. Northwestern this past Saturday, his most as a Badger. He shot 9-13 FG, including 5-7 3FG.

His five triples matched his career high, and marked the third time he's done so as a Badger. 

Klesmit registered 18 points with all of them coming in the second half. In fact, he scored 12 points in the final 5:16 of the game alone.

Through his last three halves of play, Klesmit has scored 42 points (14-20 FG, 7-11 3FG).

Max Klesmit has scored double figures 6 times this season (UW is 6-0 in those games).
