Michigan overcomes Badgers

Moe makes 42 saves

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — The Wisconsin men's hockey team dropped a 6-2 game at Big Ten-rival No. 6 Michigan on Friday at Yost Ice Arena.

Michigan (17-9-1, 9-8-0 Big Ten) took an early lead at 5:01 in the first period. Ethan Edwards carried the puck along the blue line in the Badgers' zone and fended off a trio of red jerseys before he sent the puck deep for Jay Keranen, who sent a backhand no-look pass to Eric Ciccolini on the doorstep. His initial shot attempt was denied, but Nick Granowicz was able to bury the rebound.

The Badgers responded with a power-play goal from freshman defenseman Tyson Jugnauth at 10:34 in the first period. Ben Dexheimer worked the puck around the perimeter to Cruz Lucius, who sent a cross-zone pass for Jugnauth. He took a step around a Wolverine defender to open up a shooting lane and let off a wrist shot that went off the far post and into the net to tie the score, 1-1.



The Wolverines regained the lead before the first period was over when Adam Fantilli buried a rebound at 12:27. Rutger McGroarty set up Gavin Brindley on a breakaway out of Michigan's zone. Goaltender Jared Moe made the save on Brindley but Fantilli was able to jab the puck over the goal line on the rebound.

Brindley added to Michigan's lead 1:42 into the second period when he scooped up a rebound in the crease from Ethan Edwards and Fantilli.

Minutes later, Brindley scored his second goal of the game on the power play on a cross from Fantilli and Mackie Samoskevich. 

The Wolverines headed into the third period with a 5-1 lead after Samoskevich tapped in a rebound on a shot from Brindley, set up by Fantilli on a five-on-three man advantage. 

Michigan's Dylan Duke scored on a one-timer from TJ Hughes and Ciccolini at 4:35 of the final frame.

Wisconsin got one back at 12:43 in the third period that started with Liam Malmquist forcing a turnover in the neutral zone. Dominick Mersch picked up the puck on the blue line and sped into the zone with Malmquist on his wing. Mersch ripped a wrist shot that hit the post and left Malmquist with an empty net to tap in the rebound.

Despite notching 14 shots in the third period and allowing just one goal, the Badgers fell to Michigan, 6-2.
