Quick Six: Badgers face Spartans in home series finale

Wisconsin will honor its seven seniors on Saturday

MADISON, Wis. — After a big win over then-No. 1 Minnesota, the Badgers are back at the Kohl Center for their final home series of the season against No. 17 Michigan State.

Here are six quick things to know before tuning in:

Rosters: Badgers || Michigan State

1 - DOWN GOES NO. 1: The Badgers defeated then-No.1 ranked Minnesota, 3-1, on Saturday night, ending the Gophers six-game series win streak in the process. The Gophers took a 1-0 lead late in the first period, but freshman Cruz Lucius sent the Badgers into the second period tied up at 1-1 when he netted an equalizer with just 21 seconds remaining. Daniel Laatsch and Carson Bantle added goals in the second period, and goaltender Kyle McClellan stood tall in net to seal the deal on the Badgers' upset win.

Wisconsin boasts a 4-2-0 record in the last six meetings with Minnesota when the Gophers have been ranked No. 1.

2 -RED OUT (bucky's version): Friday is a RED OUT (bucky's version) at the Kohl Center! Fans are encouraged to wear red and the first 1,000 students will receive a red Wisconsin hockey scarf.

3 -  SENIOR SALUTE: Prior to Saturday's game at the Kohl Center, Wisconsin will recognize its seven seniors, three of whom are fifth-year graduate students. That includes fifth-year captain Dominick Mersch and fifth-year alternate captains Brock Caufield and Jack Gorniak. Academic seniors in forward Owen Lindmark, defensemen Mike Vorlicky and Shay Donovan, as well as goaltender Jared Moe will also be honored pregame.

This weekend's series at the Kohl Center is the final home weekend this season for the Badgers.

4 - GAME-WINNING LAATSCH: Sophomore defenseman Daniel Laatsch scored the game-winning goal in UW's 3-1 upset over Minnesota for his first tally of the season and first career game-winner. The goal was his first in 29 games, dating back to March 6, 2022, at Notre Dame during the 2022 Big Ten Tournament.

5 - B1G STARS: Junior goaltender Kyle McClellan was named Big Ten Third Star of the week for his outstanding performance over Minnesota. He made 32 saves on the night, including all 14 shots faced in the third period to secure the Badgers' win over the Gophers.

6 - BROTHERLY LOVE: Fifth-year graduate student Brock Caufield shares the team lead with 10 goals after tallying last Friday against Minnesota. If Caufield finishes the season as UW's leading goal-scorer it would put him in rare company.

Mark Johnson led the Badgers in goals three times (1977-79 with 36, 48 and 41), while his brother Peter shared the team lead during the 1980–81 season with 30 goals. They are the only brother duo to do that to this point.

Brock's brother, Cole, led the Badgers with 19 goals in 2019–20 and 30 goals in 2020–21.

The Badgers do have a father-son combination that led the program in goals. Murray Heatley's 25 goals paced the 1969–70 squad while Dany Heatley's 1999–2000 (28 goals) and 2000–01 (24) seasons led the Badgers.

HOW TO WATCH: Puck drop on Friday is set for 8 p.m on Big Ten Network and the Fox Sports App. Saturday's matchup is slated for 7 p.m. on Bally Sports Wisconsin and streams on B1G+. Follow along on Twitter and Instagram at @BadgerMHockey.
