Starting Five: Big Ten Tournament

No. 2 Badgers set for conference tournament to begin Friday

MADISON, Wis. – Wisconsin men's basketball heads to the Big Ten Men's Basketball Tournament this week as the No. 2 seed, beginning play Friday at 5:30 p.m. CT facing the winner of Michigan State/Maryland matchup. Before the quarterfinal game, here is the Starting Five:
 
1. B1G Awards: Five Badgers received Big Ten honors Tuesday morning. Greg Gard was named Coach of the Year for the second time in the last three seasons. Johnny Davis was named the Big Ten Player of the Year, becoming the fourth Badger to claim the honor.
 
 
Brad Davison claimed second-team All-Big Ten honors, Tyler Wahl found himself on the All-Big Ten honorable mention list, and Chucky Hepburn earned Big Ten All-Freshmen Team distinctions.
 
Since 2002, Wisconsin has earned 17 first-team All-Big Ten honors, which is the most of any school in the conference. Ohio State and Purdue are second with 15. In addition to the all-conference honors, Jordan Davis was awarded the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award.
 
2. Senior Sendoff: Wisconsin suffered a 74-73 loss to Nebraska this past Sunday, but finished the regular season with a share of the Big Ten title. Sunday, the Badgers were led by a pair of seniors in the contest. Brad Davison put up 20 points and added four rebounds and dished out three assists. Chris Vogt hit double figures for the first time this season, scoring 13 points and leading the team with two blocks. Seniors Davison, Vogt, and Carter Higginbottom were honored before and after the game for their contributions to the program.
 
3. Brick Wahl: Tyler Wahl continues to showcase his invaluable contributions to this year's Badgers team. The junior has snagged five steals in back-to-back games. On Sunday, the junior forward also scored 13 points and grabbed a team-high seven rebounds. Wahl is tied for the team lead in blocks (23).

4. Tourney Time: In 23 appearances in the Big Ten tournament, Wisconsin is 15-8 in opening round games, including winners in four straight over the past four tournaments. The Badgers hold the No. 2 seed for the fifth time going into the event. UW has advanced to the semifinal match all four times they have been a No. 2 seed, including three appearances in the championship game. Wisconsin has won the conference tournament title three times with the most recent coming in 2015 against Michigan State.
 
5. Scouting Opponents: The Badgers will play the winner of the Michigan State/Maryland matchup. This season, UW is 1-0 against the Terrapins at split the season series with the Spartans. All time, Wisconsin holds a 12-7 advantage over Maryland with a 3-1 record in games played on neutral sites. The Badgers trail the overall series with Michigan State, 84-67. When played on neutral ground the Spartans hold the advantage, 7-4.
