Five home matches highlight challenging slate
MADISON, Wis. – Women's tennis head coach Kelcy McKenna has announced the release of the 2023 season schedule. The Badgers will face off against six opponents in Madison at the Nielsen Tennis Stadium, starting with a doubleheader against Northern Illinois and Milwaukee on February 2nd.
The spring season officially kicks off on January 13 when the team travels to Columbia, South Carolina for the Carolina Kickoff invitational. When the calendar flips to March, the Badgers enter Big Ten play with a pair of matches in Minneapolis against Minnesota on March 3 and Iowa on March 4. UW's Big Ten opener is April 14 against Illinois.
Wisconsin will face at least five teams from the 2022 NCAA Tournament field including:Â Baylor, Michigan, North Carolina, Northwestern, Ohio State and Washignton.
The season culminates with the 2022 Big Ten Tournament April 26-30 in West Lafayette, Indiana as well as the NCAA Team and Individuals in May.
Wisconsin is coming off a successful 2022 campaign which saw it finish with an overall record of 17-9 and an impressive conference record of 8-3. Highlights of the 2022 season included a 4-3 win of No. 36 SMU, a 6-1 win over No. 61 Penn State, a big 4-3 rivalry win against No. 61 Minnesota and a Big Ten Tournament win over Illinois 4-1.
McKenna enters her seventh at Wisconsin and has turned the Badgers into one of the top programs in the Big Ten. Over the last four seasons, she has piloted UW to a record of 51-28, including 24-15 in Big Ten play.
Players to watch are freshman Maria Sholokhova and senior Ava Markham. In the first Division I Women's ITA Collegiate Tennis Singles Rankings, Sholokhova checked in at 59th in the country and Markham came in at 82nd.
