No. 2 Badgers corral Mavericks, 5-1

Curl scores twice to extend UW’s unbeaten run to seven games

MANKATO, Minn. – The second-ranked Wisconsin women's hockey team wrapped up the first half of its schedule with a 5-1 win over Minnesota State on Saturday afternoon at the Mayo Clinic Health System Event Center.Ā 

Britta Curl scored twice while Casey O'Brien, Laila Edwards and Sophie Shirley also lit the lamp for the Badgers (15-2-1,12-1-1-1-1-0 WCHA) to help complete the sweep of the Mavericks (7-11-0, 5-10-0-1-0-0 WCHA).

Curl started off the scoring for the Badgers after capitalizing on a delayed penalty with an extra attacker.Ā 

The Mavericks tied the game up with a power play goal before Curl answered with another to regain the lead.Ā 

O'Brien extended the lead early in the second period after finding the top left corner of the goal.Ā 

Laila Edwards tallied her fourth point of the weekend to make it 4-1 Badgers.Ā 

Sophie Shirley tacked on a power-play goal with six minutes left in the third to cap off the scoring for the Cardinal and White.

Cami Kronish made her fourth-straight start, stopping 12 of the 13 shots she faced to earn her ninth win of the season.Ā 

Three Notes of the Game
- Curl has seven goals in the last four games after posting a hat trick last Friday at Bemidji State.Ā 
- Harvey ranks third in program history in freshman defender scoring with 25 points. Only Sis Paulsen (44) and Kerry Weiland (35) have posted more points as rookie defenders.Ā 
- The Badgers are 9-0-0 this season in the second games of series, outscoring opponents 55-11.Ā

On how the series went:

"I think it went really well. We were expecting to come this weekend and have two pretty competitive games. I think we did a lot of good things this weekend and came away with all six points."

On the team's success in the first half of the season:
"The first half has gone really well. We've played a lot of good teams and have done what we've wanted to accomplish. The biggest thing this time of year is just getting better and learning how to play together and I think we've done that really well."

On how the season has gone so far:

"I'm really happy with the way that this group has played. I feel like we've gotten better every single weekend and we've learned some things about ourselves. We've faced adversity and have been able to overcome it, so I'm looking forward to the second half of the season."
