Down goes No. 1: Badgers take down Gophers 4-1

UW earns series win against top-ranked Minnesota

MADISON, Wis. – The No. 3 Wisconsin women's hockey team earned a series win against No. 1 Minnesota thanks to a 4-1 triumph on Sunday afternoon in front of a sellout crowd at LaBahn Arena.

Nicole LaMantia, Sarah Wozniewicz, Kirsten Simms and Jesse Compher each tallied goals for the Badgers (11-2-1, 8-1-0-1-1-0 WCHA) in their win over the top-ranked Gophers (9-2-2, 9-1-2-1-0-1 WCHA).

LaMantia broke nearly 15 minutes of silence with a power play goal, before Minnesota answered with a power play goal of their own to tie it up.

The Badgers regained the lead after a back and forth second period with a goal from Wozniewicz.

Simms started off the third period with her fifth goal of the season, not long before Compher extended the lead to 4-1 with a rocket to the top shelf.

Cami Kronish made 26 saves to earn her fifth win of the season.

Head Coach Mark Johnson
On completing the game against a strong opponent:

"At times we've made improvements in some areas. You have a one goal lead going into the third period against a good opponent, you're going to spend some time in your end so you just have to continue to compete and continue to play aggressive and make sure you're doing your individual jobs. I thought for most of the 60 minutes we did a pretty good job."

On the strong ending to the game:
"The thing that I like is what I saw the last eight to ten minutes today. We got ourselves in a position where we are able to execute and do the things necessary to eliminate the other team from really getting quality chances. We started battling, positioning, doing things. My message before the game was we still have to compete we just have to play a little smarter."

Freshman Kirsten Simms:
On Kronish's unexpected entrance into the game:

"Us as a team trusted her… we had no worries at all. With how she's been playing lately, we knew she was going to be just fine. With every big save she made it just brought us up even more and gave us even more energy on the upfront."

Senior Cami Kronish:
On the team's defensive success:

"I am so proud of the way that we played today. It was such a complete game and seeing my teammates lay out and block a shot creates just the most unbelievable feeling as a goaltender that your teammates are willing to put their bodies in front of the puck… It was just a full team effort, everyone wanted to win."

Up Next:
The Badgers have another bye week before they head to northern Minnesota to take on Bemidji State. Puck drop on Friday, Dec. 2 is set for 3 p.m. at the Sanford Center while the series will wrap up on Saturday, Dec. 3 at 2 p.m.
