Badgers fall to Penn State

Mersch nets lone Badger goal

MADISON, Wis. — The Wisconsin men's hockey team jumped out to an early lead, but fell short to No. 16 Penn State in a Big Ten conference match at the Kohl Center on Friday.

The Penn State Nittany Lions (7-0-0, 0-0-0 0-0-0 Big Ten) came into the weekend looking to keep their perfect record intact.

Captain Dominick Mersch provided the Badgers (2-5-0, 0-3-0 0-0-0 Big Ten) with an early 1-0 lead 3:41 into the first period. Liam Malmquist started the play when he won a puck battle in the neutral zone and dumped the puck behind the net. Mersch won the race to the puck and fed it back to Sam Stange along the boards, who fired a shot on net for Mersch to tip in.

Penn State tied the score, 1-1, at 13:52 in the first period. Defenseman Christian Berger slid a pass across the blue line to defensive partner Jarod Crespo, who took a shot that deflected off Kevin Wall's skate.

Penn State's Tyler Paquette gave his squad a 2-1 lead with a shot from the goal line that took a weird bounce and ended up in the back of the net three minutes into the second period, assisted by Xander Lamppa.

Wisconsin headed into the third period trailing by one goal.

The Badgers battled and posted 10 shots in the final period but were unable to make up the deficit, falling 2-1 to Penn State.

Notes to know:
  • Goaltender Jared Moe made 35 saves in net
  • Dominick Mersch netted his first goal of the season
  • Wisconsin was perfect on seven penalty kills
