Badgers edged out by St. Cloud State

Ceulemans nets first goal of the season

MADISON, Wis.  — The Wisconsin men's hockey team (0-4-0, 0-2-0 Big Ten) played its best game of the young season, but came up short against No. 10 St. Cloud State (4-0-0, 0-0-0 NCHC) on Saturday at the Kohl Center.

The Badgers and Huskies battled through a scoreless first period.

Wisconsin successfully killed off a five-minute major penalty in the second period thanks to a strong performance in net from goaltender Kyle McClellan.

Just after the Badgers returned to full strength, Grant Cruikshank gave St. Cloud a 1-0 lead at 18:23. Veeti Miettinen passed to Kyler Kupka behind the net who threaded a pass to Cruikshank on the crease. The puck bounced around before trickling into the net.

The Badgers skated into the third period looking for the equalizer.

Sophomore defenseman Corson Ceulemans answered the call at 8:34 in the third period, tying the score 1-1. Dominick Mersch passed up the boards to Mike Vorlicky who took a lap around the offensive zone and dropped the puck for Ceulemans on the point. He took a few steps in before ripping a shot crossbar down for his first goal of the season.

St. Cloud took a 2-1 lead with a power-play goal at 13:58 of the third period. Kupka scored when a shot attempt hit off a Badger, then Kupka.

Wisconsin pulled McClellan in favor of an extra attacker in the final minutes but was unable to make up the deficit, falling 2-1 to the Huskies.

Notes to know:
  • Ceulemans netted his first goal of the season
  • Vorlicky tallied his first point since missing the entirety of last season due to injury with an assist on Ceulemans' goal
