Badgers tie No. 17 Buckeyes in overtime

Peltonen nets first career goal

MADISON, Wis. — The Badgers men's hockey team faced Ohio State in a 2-2 overtime draw at the Kohl Center on Sunday afternoon.

A penalty-ridden first period set the tone for what would be a long and physical match between the Badgers (6-13-3, 3-8-1 1-1-0 Big Ten) and Buckeyes (15-6-0, 7-4-1 0-0-1 Big Ten).

Zach Urdahl scored shorthanded to give the Badgers a 1-0 lead at 12:45 in the first period. Defenseman Josh Ess tapped the puck up to Jack Gorniak after an OSU turnover. Gornaik then slid a pass across to Urdahl in front of the net. Urdahl held onto the puck for a moment before using his backhand to lift it into the goal.

The Buckeyes responded in the second period when Quinn Preston rushed the net and tucked in a rebound. Cam Thiesing got control of the puck on the boards and rimmed it behind the net to Georgii Merkolov who directed the puck on net for Preston.

The Badgers and Ohio State headed into the third period all tied up at 1-1.

Jesper Peltonen netted his first career goal at 14:26 in the third period to put Wisconsin up 2-1. The senior defenseman out of Finland scored unassisted, firing a laser from the point that made it past a screened Jakub Dobes.

The Badgers lead was short lived as Ohio State's Merkulov tied the game less than a minute later. Merkolov launched a shot from the top of the circle on a feed from Thiesing.

After finishing 2-2 in regulation, the Badgers and Buckeyes headed to a scoreless overtime and eventually a shootout where Ohio State claimed the extra point in the Big Ten standings.

Goaltender Jared Moe made 37 stops in net and the Badgers posted 40 shots on the night.

Their 2-2 finish marks Wisconsin's third tie this season. Ohio State went on to win 2-1 in a four-round shootout.

Notes to know:
  • Jesper Peltonen scored his first goal as a Badger in his 71st game played
  • Zach Urdahl's goal is the first shorthanded goal OSU has given up this season
  • The Badgers were perfect on three penalty kills
