Badgers rally 4-1 over Penn State

Baker, Caufield notch three points in Badgers win

MADISON, Wis. — The Wisconsin Badgers men's hockey team rallied 4-1 over Penn State thanks to a three-goal second period Friday at the Kohl Center.

Penn State (10-7-0 2-6-0 0-0-0 Big Ten) out-shot Wisconsin 14-8 in the first period but the Badgers (5-11-1, 3-6-0 1-0-0 Big Ten) notched some quality chances right out of the gate.

Tarek Baker gave the Badgers a 1-0 lead on a feed from Sam Stange at 12:58 in the second period to break the ice. Stange circled behind Penn State's net and found Baker in the slot, where he fired a wrist shot top shelf.

The Badgers seemed to get a boost of energy from their fresh lead and were ready to take advantage of a three-minute major power-play advantage after a scrum in front of the Penn State Goal. Mathieu De St. Phalle netted his second goal of the season on the power-play at 7:13 in the second period. Brock Caufield passed to Baker down low on the blue line, where he threaded the needle to De St. Phalle across the crease. The sophomore forward wound up for a one-timer and launched the puck past Penn State's Oskar Autio.

A two-goal period wasn't enough for the Badgers. Just minutes later, Caufield scored an almost identical goal on the power-play. Corson Ceulemans quarterbacked the play on the point and fired a shot through traffic to the net where it deflected off Baker. A Penn State defenseman attempted a clear, but flubbed it to the side where Caufield swooped in with a one-timer to put the Badgers up 3-0.

Penn State got on the board with 6:25 remaining in the third period. Tyler Gratton tapped the puck in after a scramble in front of the net.

Penn State pulled their goaltender with under two minutes remaining. Roman Ahcan netted an empty-net goal with 50 seconds on the clock to make the final score 4-1.

Goaltender Jared Moe played calm and collected in net, making 34 saves for the Badgers' win.

Notes to know:
  • The Badgers have played through a 0-0 first period for the past three games and seven times total on the season
  • Baker and Caufield each scored a goal and two assists for a three-point performance
  • Baker's last three-point game was also against Penn State on Nov. 24, 2020
  • Wisconsin produced its first two power-play goal game of the season
