ATLANTA, Ga. — Wisconsin men's basketball is back in action Wednesday night at Georgia Tech after stringing three-straight wins together to bring home the 2021 Maui Invitational title. This week's midweek matchup with the Yellow Jackets will feature two one-loss teams in the annual Big Ten/ACC Challenge. Before the Badgers head to Atlanta, here are some notes to know heading into the contest.
JOHNNY VEGAS: After missing UW's game against Providence (injury) heading into the Maui Invitational, guard
Johnny Davis made up for lost time in Las Vegas for the Badgers. The speedy sophomore took home the Dr. Sue Wesselkamper MVP honors for the event and led the team with 23.7 points, 6.7 rebounds, and 2.3 steals per game over the three-day tournament in Las Vegas. This season, Davis ranks fourth in the conference averaging 20.2 points per game, while ranking fifth in steals averaging 2.0 swipes per contest.
NO EASY BUCKETS:Â The Badgers rank ninth in the country and lead the Big Ten this season in scoring defense, allowing opponents just 55.2 points per game and limiting the opposition to only 38 percent shooting from the floor.Â
TAKING CARE OF THE ROCK: After leading the nation with the fewest turnovers per game last season, Wisconsin looks to keep pace again this season. So far, the Badgers are only turning the ball over nine times per contest, which is tied for second in the conference with Iowa. On the other side of the floor, UW is forcing 14 turnovers per contest. UW's 5.0 turnover margin ranks fourth in the Big Ten.
B1G/ACC HISTORY:Â Wisconsin is 11-11 in the annual challenge between the two power conferences. UW's 11 wins are tied for most in the challenge out of all Big Ten programs. The other schools with the same total wins include: Minnesota, Penn State, and Purdue. Last season as part of the challenge, the Badgers cruised to an impressive 85-48 win over No. 23 Louisville at the Kohl Center.
BADGERS VS. YELLOW JACKETS:Â The all-time series between Wisconsin and Georgia Tech is tied, 1-1, heading into Wednesday's meeting. The first contest between the two programs came at "The Mecca" in Milwaukee back in 1963, where Wisconsin won, 104-84. The Badgers and Yellow Jackets met in the 2001 version of the Big Ten/ACC Challenge, with Georgia Tech edging out a 62-61 victory.
Tip on Wednesday night is set for 8:15 p.m. CT at McCamish Pavilion in Atlanta. The game will air on ESPN2.
