Badgers take down Ohio State

Wisconsin extends three-game win streak in final Big Ten series

COLUMBUS, Ohio – In the search for late season momentum, the Wisconsin men's hockey team took down No. 10 Ohio State on the road Friday night thanks to a huge third-period goal from senior Max Zimmer. The Badgers beat the Buckeyes, 3-2, and ended OSU's Big Ten title hopes.

With just over six minutes left in the game, captain Wyatt Kalynuk netted a power-play goal for the Badger lead, but it was wiped off after review due to goalie interference. Not long after, the lone senior skater for Wisconsin, Zimmer continued his late season success and gave Wisconsin the lead for sure this time with a rebound finish on the same power play. The Buckeyes would not recover.

The first period boasted sensational play from both goaltenders between the pipes with both Badger goalie Daniel Lebedeff and Buckeye goalie Tommy Napier saving each shot they faced. UW led 18-12 in shots.

The tie broke in the second period with a Buckeye goal, but freshman Alex Turcotte netted a goal of his own to tie things back up for Wisconsin. The freshman would tally a multi-point game with an assist on Zimmer's goal.

Sophomore Brock Caufield gave the Badgers their first lead of the game with his first goal of the season about half way through the second period off a rebound of an Owen Lindmark shot during a scramble crashing the net.

Lebedeff faced 37 shots on the night, blocking all but two of them en route to victory. He totaled 35 saves on the night.

Notes to know:
  • This is the third game of the season in which both Caufield brother notched points for Wisconsin
  • Cole Caufield recorded an assist to tie for the Big Ten lead with 23 points in league play.
  • Max Zimmer has three goals over the last two games and all seven of his season's goals over the last 11 contests
Straight from the rink:
Head Coach Tony Granato
"The last month, our team has trended the right way and I think the results are finally catching up tp that. That was a good example of it right there. You finally get a [power play] chance when the game is on the line. You're feeling good about how your team is playing and your [power play] went over the boards with a lot of confidence that they were going to be the difference makers iin the game tonight. To have it taken away and have to do it again, it kind of just shows how much we have grown as a team."

Up Next: The Badgers will take on Ohio State again tomorrow night in their regular season finale. Puck drop is 7 p.m. in Columbus and fans can watch the game on BTN with a live radio play-by-play on 1310 WIBA.
