Badgers return to competition, travel to Maryland, Rutgers
MADISON, Wis. – Free from competition since the end of February, the Wisconsin women's tennis team is ready to return to the courts. The Badgers (8-2 overall, 1-0 Big Ten) will travel east this weekend to compete against Maryland on Saturday, March 16 at 11 a.m. CT and Rutgers on Sunday, March 17 at 11:30 a.m. CT.
1. BRIEF RECAP: The Badgers most recently took part in a two-match weekend at Nielsen Tennis Stadium in Madison, where Wisconsin hosted Utah and Minnesota. The Badgers suffered a 4-3 defeat versus the Utes, who are now ranked No. 44 in the country, before bouncing back and defeating Minnesota, 5-2 in the conference opener.
2. SCOUTING MARYLAND: The Terrapins currently possess a 3-7 overall record and a 1-0 Big Ten record. Maryland opened the season with a loss against Navy before going on to beat Georgetown. In its most recent contest the Terps defeated Rutgers, 6-1.
3. SCOUTING RUTGERS: Rutgers holds a 6-3 overall record at the moment, including 1-1 in Big Ten play. Before coming to Wisconsin, the Scarlet Knights are set to host Minnesota on Friday. Prior to its loss at Maryland, Rutgers had won four of five matches, including a 7-0 victory over Towson.
4. SPRING MARKS: Senior Sara Castellano, ranked No. 36 in the nation, holds a perfect 10-0 spring singles record for Wisconsin. Sophomore Lexi Keberle, ranked No. 73, sits at 9-1 for the Badgers. Freshman Ava Markham also holds a 9-1 singles mark, sophomore MaryAnn Rompf and Anna Makarova both sit at 7-3, while juniors Melissa Pick and Christina Zordani hold a 5-3 and 1-1 record, respectively.
In doubles competition, Wisconsin's best duos are the combos of Makarova and Pick, 2-0 up to this point, and Pick and Rompf, 4-0 in dual play.
5: HISTORY LESSON: Wisconsin and Maryland have met just four times in program history, with Wisconsin holding a 3-1 advantage. As for Rutgers, the Badgers also hold a 3-1 all-time advantage over the Scarlet Knights. The most recent meeting between these programs came in the same weekend in 2018 when Wisconsin defeated Rutgers, 7-0, and Maryland, 5-2, at the Nielsen Tennis Stadium.
