UW scores six goals in the first to top LIU in series opener
SYOSSET, NY – Led by a six-goal first period, the top-ranked Wisconsin women's hockey team skated past LIU, 10-2, on Friday night at Ice Works.
Sophie Shirley and Presley Norby scored twice while Daryl Watts, Brette Pettet, Britta Curl, Chayla Edwards, Abby Roque and Grace Shirley all scored for the Badgers (7-0-0, 2-0-0 WCHA as they outshot the Sharks (0-3-0, 0-0-0 NEWHA) 64-13.
The game-winning goal came just one minute into the first from Watts, who was on fire with a four-point game. The 2018 Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award winner and last week's WCHA Forward of the Week continued her scoring streak to eight goals in seven-straight games, tying her for fourth in Badger history next to Annie Pankowski's same streak last year. Watts also netted her 150th career collegiate point.
Pettet took the second goal of the game on a power-play just 40 seconds after Watts in the first period.
Wisconsin dominated play in every period but topped the first with six goals to make it tied as the fourth most scored in a single frame in school history.
Sophie Shirley followed with two more goals, the first on a breakaway with a puck up the ice from Watts three minutes later and the second on a tic-tac-toe power-play at 17:06 in.
Curl and Norby finished out the first with back-to-back goals with less than two minutes left. Curl put one in fresh off a faceoff pass by Alexis Mauermann, and Norby posted a perfect play top-shelf goal from junior Caitlin Schneider.
In the second, Edwards sniped her first career goal from the blue line off a pass from Norby with 17:09 left in the second.
After a LIU goal, Roque scored a power-play goal, her NCAA-leading fourth power-play tally of the season to give UW an 8-2 lead after two periods.
Grace Shirley tapped in her first career goal with 11:43 remaining in the game and assisted by freshman Dara Greig, her first career point, and junior Natalie Buchbinder.
Norby followed with her second goal of the game four minutes before the end of the third.

On the game:
"It was good. You get more out of these types of things than you do in practice, so obviously we started off quickly and after the first period, we could continue the progress of becoming the better team. Some kids got play more than they normally do, get a couple goals involved in the game. I know Long Island is excited to play from a standpoint of trying to grow as a startup. A lot of good things happened today, not only on the ice, but away from it as well.
On Cami Kronish's first game:
"That's the fun part about these games. If you can come out and do what we did in the first period, then you can get more kids involved in situations and see what they look like. So, for Cami, for her first live action since she's been a Badger, she's excited playing in front of her family, so I'm excited for her.
On playing at the Nassau Coliseum, an NHL rink:
"It's a historical rink. When I was playing in the NHL, the Islanders were one of the dominant teams, so a chance to be back there should make the game very special."

Three Notes of the Game
- The Badgers' six first-period goals were tied for the fourth-most goals in a single period of play. It also marked the first time Feb. 14, 2016, that UW scored six goals in a single period. UW scored double-digit goals for the first time since defeating Lindenwood, 13-0, on Sept. 25, 2011.
- The Badgers' power play was perfect, scoring on all four of their opportunities. UW has converted its last eight power-play opportunities and leads the country with 17 power-play tallies.
- Cami Kronish, a native of New York, earned her first collegiate action, playing the final two periods for UW. She stopped nine shots in her Badger debut.
