Badgers dominate Merrimack with double-digit goals

Caufield, Turcotte, Miller all score twice

NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. -- Tallying their first win of the season, the Wisconsin men's hockey team lit up the back of the net as they defeated Merrimack on the Warriors' home ice, 11-5.

After only scoring three goals in last night's opening season loss, the Badgers racked up double-digit goals with three Badgers netting two goals each including Cole Caufield, Alex Turcotte and K'Andre Miller.

Wisconsin got off to a slow start in the first period, but a six-goal second period energized a Badger run that could not be overcome. Other Badger scorers included Tyler Inamoto, Dylan Holloway, Mick Messner, Roman Ahcan and Ty Pelton-Byce.

Fifteen Badgers scored points in Saturday night's win including top producers in Cole Caufield, Ahcan and Turcotte with three each, alongside Wyatt Kalynuk, Linus Weissbach, Owen Lindmark and Sean Dhooghe with two assists each.

The last time Wisconsin scored 11 or more goals came against Northern Michigan in 1992.

Notes to Know
  • Cole Caufield's goal six seconds into the third period was one second off the school record for fastest goal to start a period. Ron Vincent scored five seconds into the second period in a 9-2 victory over Michigan State on Jan. 26, 1980.
  • Wisconsin's three first-round draft picks each scored a pair of goals in the game with K'Andre Miller, Alex Turcotte and Cole Caufield each scoring twice.
  • Miller's short-handed goal gives UW two in two games, matching the team's short-handed goal total from all of last season.

Up next: Wisconsin will play its home opener versus two-time defending NCAA champion Minnesota Duluth next Friday and Saturday. Opening face off will happen at 7 p.m. both nights and fans can watch on Fox Sports Wisconsin, listen on 1310 WIBA or tag along online by following @BadgerMHockey on Twitter.
