MILWAUKEE, Wis. – Wisconsin (4-4-1, 1-1 B1G) traveled a short way down I-94 to square off against in-state rival Marquette (3-6, 1-1 Big East) in the annual derby match. The Badgers beat Marquette 1-0 in an absolute cage-match that exhibited 32 total fouls.
The Badgers broke the scoreless tie in the 55
th minute of play after outshooting the Golden Eagles 13-2 at that point. The breakthrough came from a beautiful through ball from sophomore
Michael Russell II that found a cutting freshman
Andrew Akindele who took two touches before beating the keeper to the bottom corner of the net.
Junior goalkeeper
Dean Cowdroy tallied some impressive saves on the night for the Badgers and succeeded in providing the shutout for the Cardinal and White. It is the third shutout of the season for Wisconsin.
Wisconsin led shots 16-9 and shots on goal 4-2 over Marquette. The Golden Eagles stole the lead in corners, 7-3.
Straight from the pitch:
Head coach John Trask
"Hard-fought Darby as it always is with Marquette. Nice to get a shut-out. Nice to get a goal from one of our forwards. It was a challenge I put to the forwards at half-time so it was nice to see Andrew get a goal. Once again, I thought the minutes from
Michael Russell II and
Ben Leas were fantastic.
Dean Cowdroy got the shut-out and that was fantastic as well. I thought we really held strong. They had seven corner kicks and free kicks in some very dangerous places and we battled.
"This is a part of college soccer. You can win by doing good things and you can win by battling. You have to have both those parts if you're going to be successful. I was very pleased today and I told them that. Now we look to Sunday for a huge Big Ten game against Michigan State."
