MADISON, Wis. – The Wisconsin men's tennis team is ready to kick it in gear for the fall season that starts this weekend. The Badgers will split up its roster, sending four to the Milwaukee Tennis Classic and four to the Ivy Plus Invitational.
1. Milwaukee Tennis Classic: The Badgers will send senior
Alan Sweet, junior
Chase Colton, and sophomores
Robert Krill and
Jesper Freimuth to the in-state classic that starts on Thursday. The four will compete against the SEC teams Alabama, Arkansas, and Tennessee; ACC teams Syracuse Virginia Tech, North Carolina State, and Notre Dame; Big Ten schools Illinois, Iowa, Michigan State, Minnesota, and Purdue; as well as teams from way out west Cal, Southern Cal, San Diego, and Saint Mary's. It is safe to say that the Wisconsin quartet will face some pretty serious talent in their opening weekend. Match play is set to start on Thursday at 8 a.m. (CT). Singles play will be a round of 64 tournament style, while doubles will be a round of 32 play-style.
2. Ivy Plus Invitational: While four Badgers stay home protecting state turf, senior
Osgar O'Hoisin, sophomore
Martim Vilela, and freshman newcomers
Daniel Nuzhny and
Jared Pratt will head to Princeton, New Jersey for the Ivy Plus tournament. The Ivy Plus tournament will be hosted by Princeton University and will be played in Jadwin Gym. Draws for the tournament will be released later this week.
3. A Season in Review: The Badgers are on a general upward trend since head coach
Danny Westerman took over four year ago. Under Westerman's wing and watchful eye, Wisconsin -- a team that posted a dismal 7-18 losing record the year before his arrival – turned a winning 14-9 record. Westerman has posted a winning record every year since, tallying an impressive 46-29 record with a team culture still growing. Last year, the Badgers posted a 14-12 record, but failed to qualify for the NCAA tournament due to road woes and a quick exit at the Big Ten tournament. However, then-seniors
Chema Carranza and Joe Dodridge took a magical ride to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA doubles tournament before falling to the nation's best pair in absolute heartbreak-fashion.
4. Who's new?: Wisconsin certainly has some new faces on the roster after saying goodbye to seniors
Chema Carranza, Joe Dodridge,
Lamar Remy, and
Darius Mackenzie, as well as sophomore
Daniel Soyfer to transfer. But Wisconsin's ninth-ranked recruiting class welcomes a new and exciting era of Badger tennis to the Nielsen Tennis Stadium. Wisconsin welcomes freshman
Daniel Nuzhny and
Jared Pratt to the Badger family.
